Oil mist from air filer
« on: August 25, 2013, 10:47:19 AM »

Just got home from our Sturgis trip & 7100 miles. Only issue with the bike is an oil mist from the air filter. I had to wipe off the motor & exhaust at least twice a day. Also the mist would get on my right pants leg. Air filter is a K&N which I cleaned & reoiled before the trip. I have ran this filter for 2.5 years. Oil tank is not overfilled so I know that is not the problem. Oil change @ 5000 miles, 3 quarts.

I have always had a little oil residue on the motor since it was new. Now it seams in excess. I will be taking it in to the dealer & they say they need to replace the breathers in the rocker boxes. The bike now has 20,000 miles on it.

I'm looking for some input from all the forum members that have had this problem or who know how to fix it. Is this the right fix or should it be looked into farther when it is torn down?

Thanks, Danner

If you have an A motor, I have read good things about the S&S crank case breather reed valve, but no first hand experience.

I'm sure new media inserts and umbrella valves in the rocker supports would help.  While you are in there, I'd also enlarge the drain holes in the rocker supports.  I enlarged mine to a #38 (.1015") to assist with oil draining back to the crank case.

I would just replace your breathers with the new style ones. They are a unit and only cost about $13 apiece. They bolt right on top of the rocker supports.

I always drill out the oil return holes on my bikes to 1/8" (.125"). Seems to help with any misting issues.

Try installing this kit without the catch tank.  To hide the vent hose, run it under the tank, down the backbone and to the ground with the gas overflow hose.  Have used this set up on my bike for six years, totally maintenance free and no worries with oil mist on me or the bike.

Yup!  This is what I always do, too.

I also have problems with oil mist on long runs, did check and verified the 2013's are using #29267-08A breather bolts, but not sure on the drilling procedure, are you enlarging the hole in the bolts?

Thanks

No. There are two oil drain holes in the rocker support plates. Take the plates off and just drill them out to 1/8". I also countersink them a bit to improve oil drainage. I don't have a picture though. Perhaps someone else does.

I have done this on Evos and well as Twin Cams.

I had similar problems, and solved the problem with the V&H naked air filter set up.  This air filter system has the internal tubes to route the mist into the engine not just into the air filter.  Works for me.

I just got that problem solved. I have a 2008 CVO Ultra Classic Screamin Eagle. I found two things, if I let the engine find its own oil level,it nearly stops the problem oh and 3 quarts is too much. Its like 2.5-6 Qts. My happy spot is half way between the maximum hot mark and the add one quart it puts out very little mist. If I try to keep it on the hot full mark I will get oil all over as you discribed. I have a Stage one air intake. While talking to my dealer service manager about the problem he told me he had the garenteed fix. They modify in the dealer shop the air cleaner mounting base by glueing vent extenders with epoxy into the base so they point into the intake toward the butter fly quite aways further in than the stock vents. I have not had one drop of oil out the intake since I had this done, not even mist. I may not have explained it well but if you call Jimmy at Quaid HD in Loma Linda CA he can set you up.
