Oil leaking into air cleaner
« on: July 29, 2013, 08:28:36 AM »

I was detailing my bike (2013 CVO Ultra) this past weekend and noticed a small amount of oil on the bottom of the air cleaner. I took the air cleaner apart and there was a pudde of oil inside the air cleaner housing. Just had the 1000 mile service done last week. Whats up?

Check your oil level,  sounds like it's been over filled

Puddle? Please be more descriptive on the amount as it does matter. Oil back to the Air element is a natural occurance on Vtwin motors. A drop or so after a ride is common. Large amounts could man several things, for one overfill as Aussie stated. If your bike is running fine you have no worries.

I should have mentioned that I did check the oil level and it is within the proper fill range. The amount of oil was a puddle about the size of a half dollar. It was starting to leak through the air cleaner element.

Clean it up and put it back together. Now that you have a 1000 miles on it , ride it hard your next few times out. not red line hard but take it up to 5-6k RPM before shifting gears and re check after a few hundred miles. You will see the motor start to burn and consume more oil. All bikes and riding conditions are different, climate etc... Half dollar is a bit much but its a new bike and if you babied it your first 1000 some recirculation is normal. Again, I am not a harley tech, just a guy who has owned several and been riding for 30 years. But I would Definately keep a close eye on it and double check your oil level when bike is hot on Kick Stand and screw dipstick all the way tight before you check. It will tell you on the dipstick where the level should be when hot on stand. I only say this because your bike is brand new and shouldn't have any compression, piston or ring  issues that may otherwise cause this amount of oil in your breather.

I did check with my local dealers service mgr. He stated a small amt of oil is normal as you stated.
I will monitor closely. Thanks for the info.
