HD headset on Nolan 104 helmet
« on: July 21, 2013, 06:16:34 PM »

I am looking at getting a Nolan 104 helmet, but I need a helmet I can install a HD headset into. With the inner visor mechanism on the lower left of he Nolan 104 I am concerned that only the N com will work. Anybody put a HD head set on a Nolan 104? What problems did you run into? Any tips for installing?

I bought a N-104 a couple of months ago and couldn't figure out how to make the H'D headset work so I bought Nolan's MCS II kit for $136 on Revzilla. It's an easy install and works great.

If installing a HD headset is your goal then what Joe posted on the MCS II from Revzilla will be your best bet and lowest cost. Here is the link to Revzilla and you will need the cord too which will bring the total to $136.

Now, I have a J&M Elite series headset in my N102 which in my opinion is a better headset than my HD. I will not be able to use it in the N104 since the change in N-Com so I have  been researching alternatives. J&M has the Elite Series available for the N104 but can't purchase and install yourself. So far I found two options. I can send it to J&M in Tucson  AZ and spend $315 for them to install and then purchase a new cord for $80 bringing my total to almost $400! Man, I didn't even spend that much for the helmet! :o

The other option I found is to send the helmet to Sierra in Troy OH and have same Elite series headset installed there for $254 and $64 for the cord bringing total to $318 (Still more than I spent on helmet) and saving almost $100. :2vrolijk_21:

Sierra is definitely the way to go John.  Mfgrs like J&M that sell direct stick to their published prices in order not to offend any of their dealers who do not discount.  But many, like Sierra, do discount - hence the savings.  You still get the J&M stuff and Sierra is great on customer service, unlike recent customer service issues with J&M themselves which have been reported here.

Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions. I installed my headset upside down on the right side of my helmet. Worked great, nice clean install.

I tried the JMCorp Elite for my Arai CZ, but it didn't come close too the HD Boom Headset. Distorted terribly and sound quality was pitiful. Then I went thru a act of congress getting my money back from JM. They are a terrible company too do business with.

Did you guys drill holes in the helmet shell to get your mic to mount on the right side?  Right now i am using double sided tape to hold it on.

I ended up drilling two holes. Took the pads out, positioned mic so it wouldn't interfere with anything. The put everything back to gether. Worked great.

Well I have had some time with my J&M headset I purchased from Sierra in Troy Ohio. They were cheaper than J&M and got the helmet back the same week. I have had no issues what so ever. I have the HD boom headset in my 3/4 helmet and don't notice any advantage over J&M, might be I'm old and can't hear the difference y'all do! :D :2vrolijk_21:

was hoping not to have to drill holes in a 300 dollar helmet.  But i do not want to spend another 150 on a headset that is made special for the helmet.  Oh well guess i will pull the drill out.
