My '99 ultra had cable clutch but the brakes had DOT 5 fluid.  Any time I rode in the mountains I had a soft and at times nonexistant rear brake pedal.  Same story, bleed and it would work for a while but softness would come back.  Nothing leaked but air was obviously entrained and evidently could not be bled out.  Did not learn about problems with air entrainment with DOT 5 fluid until after I sold the bike.

There is a return orifice in the Master Cylinder if a piece of crud from the slave cylinder travels back to the Master Cylinder it can plug the orifice. Thus blocking the fluid return path. Wife 04   had same issue. I rebuilt Master and Slave Cylinder and still had problem until I notice no fluid was returning.

Just went through Beartooth pass the week before last on the '09 and the clutch lever remained tight as ever, earlier this week was going across Glacier National Park and the clutch lever got really soft, I was concerned as this was the first time that I had experienced this on any of my bikes with the hydraulic clutch, cable clutch, or any other vehicle that I have ever driven and was thinking of going to one of the dealers in the area until the bike sat for an hour or so while we grabbed a bite and the clutch was back to normal. This one really has me scratching my head???

Last nite coming home from the 110 at the museum . My clutch lever went really soft clutch would not disengage at all. Stop signs were fun.   13 with only 3500 miles

Dealer checked it out ordered new :(w mastercylinder wont have parts for a week

that's a bummer my dealer said they had never seen any problem with the hydo. clutch's when mine craped out , but they had a rebuild kit in stock & had the bike back to me the next day? probly gona see more of these (flat clutch's) since its standard issue on the 14s
