Winter Riding
« on: October 03, 2013, 11:25:02 AM »

The winter months are not fit for extended riding in Iowa, so I am looking for advice on a place, area or event to ride between Feb 1 and March 30. My college buddies and I are looking to head south for a week and I'm looking for suggestions on where to ride or a motorcycle event.

I'm not sure we can cover that many miles easily, its 2000 miles to get to FL, not that 2K miles is insurmountable but its also a long ways to go in 6 days, especially since its winter in the northern states, and mountains.  Are there any affordable places to stay during bike week? I've been to Sturgis many times and understand that prices are drastically different when rally is goin on. My other buddies don't camp. We've talked a little bit about FL and Key West was brought up and maybe dismissed due to 2380 miles one way.

You could try South Dakota, but I would definitely suggest some long underwear!

I have ridden in SD in the winter, when we lived close to Sioux Falls. (Not Really what we had in mind) The AZ Rally looks like fun, the only issue I have is that one of the guys is a farmer and might be turning dirt that time a year in NW Iowa. We are looking for a mid winter break from the cold and a chance to get some sun and saddle time. I,appreciate all the ideas.

Even if your timing doesn't allow you to take in a rally, I would still take riding in Arizona over Florida any day of the week and twice on Sundays!  Personally I love Lake Havasu, AZ as a base location.  It is a wonderful little city that has something going on almost every night and is centrally located between Vegas, Phoenix and Palm Springs.  You can head in any direction on some pretty nice roads and find fun spots within a 2 hour ride.  Lake Havasu in March has perfect riding temps.

Wherever you and your buddies end up, have fun and ride safe.

I saw on the news that the Dakota's had snow recently.   :o  Brrrr, too soon for us.

It is still in the 70's here and we're off tomorrow on another beautiful fall colour ride!

This was a Bad weekend for western SD, Eastern NE And NW Iowa. Over 30 inches of snow and 70 mph wind over the weekend in SD, major livestock losses. Tornadoes in NE and IA close to where we live, 12 twisters total in two states. Western SD is going to be back into the 60's this this week also bad for livestock.  We can't wait to get on the road this winter and have some fun the Havasu idea looks like something to look into. Thanks again.

I'd be happy to trade.  The weather guys are now calling for 2" of rain and potential flooding in the Black Hills.  I keep asking myself why I put up with this silliness, then I look out the window and life is good.
