Clear Coat Peeling
« on: September 27, 2013, 10:07:04 AM »

Clear coat is peeling off my back fender! I don't know how to fix it short of having to repaint & reclear the fender. I need some advise from anyone that has some knowledge on fixing it. The clear is peeling at the bottom of the fender & is about the size of a dime, right now. There is no damage to the fender that might have caused it.  I know I can't get the paint from harley!

I have talked to my service manager & he will send some pics to Harley. I know what they will say. Oh Well! It's a 2011. Too bad!

I want to fix it right & not make it look like crap!

The color is 2011 CVO Black Ember. Looking to buy some paint if anyone would possibly have some.

Thanks, Danner

If the only thing that's peeling is the clear, and the base coat is OK, you can have a competent painter do a spot repair with just clear.  It shouldn't be necessary to strip the black and start over.  Talk to a good painter.

The clear on some of the CVO's is a bit special.

Using the none CVO clear can change the color as seen through it. Not as big a deal if painting the whole bike, but a piece or two will be obvious.

SOME of the clears are in fact tinted Duane, like the one on our SEEG's, but many of them are just standard clear.  Your point is a good one; make certain if the bike has a tinted clear coat that you use the tinted clear for all repairs.

Btw, when you buy the touch up kits from Harley the bikes with a tinted clear have a tube of that tinted clear included in the kit.  The kits for the bikes with standard clear do not include a tube of clear and you have to buy it separately.

I thought that was just the chrome  :nixweiss:

At least my 8+ year old paint is good. Can't say the same for the chrome though.
