Removing lowers 2013
« on: January 21, 2014, 03:50:02 PM »

Don't know if this goes here or FLHRSE5 but anyway here goes.
I want to remove the lowers and  have had difficulty figuring out how to remove the two flange nuts recessed in a plastic cylinder about 2-3 inches behind the lower speakers.  I assume they are behind the storage compartment for those without speakers in the lowers.  Tried needle nose pliers without success.  Was going to try twisting 2 slotted screw drivers, but that can't be right.

Here's what it looks like

Thanks in advance

mine is a 1/2'' socket.  after getting the nuts off, i noticed that they are basically nuts that have had 2 sides shaved down.

Nuts have been pressed on these flats to aid as a lock nut, this keeps the nut in full contact with the thread.
Pressing these surfaces distorts the thread causing a slight resistance when assembling. Same as a nyloc nut.

The solution was a 7/16 socket for those contemplating the removal of the lowers.

I've had mine off recently.   A 7/16 socket will take those off.

Harley Davidson offers a quick disconnect kit and storage bag for removing the lowers.
