Breakout luggage rack only supports 10 pounds of stock ??!?
« on: October 16, 2013, 06:20:20 PM »

Just got my rack mounted on sissy bar...  A sticker on it mention that max load is 10 lbs...   ???

Tried it with a 220 load (me...) and it holds!  Ok I would not bet on it for bumpy roads with 220 on it, but 10 ????

If I put more than 4.5 kilos on it, can it result in death or serious injury (00099b) ?

According to the HD Accessories Catalog, 10.0 is it.  Look under 'Features"

There are several factors at play here.  First is the actual strength of the part and the fastening system (and odds are the part is more than capable of handling more than 10 pounds), second is the affect on handling that a load mounted on it may have.  Any weight placed high and aft on a motorcycle can have adverse affects.  It's the same reason Harley puts a very low weight limit on the Tour Pak.  ekim60 said it best, it all boils down to covering their butts legally.  And while we can all scoff at this stuff and call BS, I would suggest using a little caution.  The affect of hanging extra weight off the ass end of a bike is proven, and a motorcycle isn't terribly forgiving to those who go too far.
