What is the best GPS portable for cars/trucks.
« on: September 11, 2014, 07:19:32 PM »

 :-\
Just got back from a week plus vacation with my wife.  We took her car which does get great milage,  but has no GPS in it.

As a result,  there were several "conflicts" as to which road to take to get us to certain sites.  I want to buy one of those suction cup or however mounted GPS units that I can switch from vehicle to vehicle as need be.  Was at a few Truck Stops along the trip and noticed they has several different units......Rand/McNally??, Garmin, etc.

Any experience out there as to one of the better ones that will show (where) you are and what road you are on and can accept input as to where you want to go...........

Using the Atlas and/or my wife peering at her smart phone on such a small display while viewing Google Maps.........is not getting the job done. :nixweiss:

Got a Garmin Nuvi 2595 from Costco last year.  Model may have been succeeded but the Nuvis work pretty well imo and they are very reasonable priced.  :2vrolijk_21:

I have the 2595 in my truck, my wifes SUV and on the bike. You can get them on ebay all day right around $100 refurbished. Great unit

Garmin has great products. Tom Tom uses their own proprietary mapping program, and I've heard mixed reviews.

I use my iPhone around town, when in my cage.  But I question whether or not it is the best for rural ares where cell coverage is sparse.

I've used several Garmins over the years and they're bulletproof.

Nice thing is you can use one of the less expensive models in your car, since it does not need to be waterproof.

Have a safe trip!

After the responses and lots of checking into web site info,  I finally went with a Garmin 2598 unit from Costco.  It was around $170,  but was over $300 dollars listed on Garmins site and multiple others.  Some sites had this unit for about the same price as I paid, but they stated ("refurbished") units versus "new".

I  contacted my local Costco store,  and they assured me that their (model 2598) units were new and (not) refurbished.  The Garmin web site tells me that this unit is one of their (2013) models......so I'm assuming that Costco bought up a bunch of their excess inventory before they (Garmin) started into their 2014 models.

Have not yet tried to use the unit but will do so pretty soon.  All indications so far,  indicate a pretty easy (return policy) at Costco,  so I will try it out and take it back pretty soon if it doesn't perform as I would expect. :nixweiss:

My garmin 665 has been my choice since it came out but has been passed up in accuracy and turn by turn usability by my iPhone

Garmin 590 LM hands down.  I have one on my 2012 SESG and can switch it to my wife's GT500 if needed.  My Dodge has one built in to the NAV/Entertainment system.
