SCREAMIN EAGLE- 110 ENGINE SIMPLE CAM/THROTTLE BODY UPGRADE
« on: November 06, 2013, 01:12:42 AM »

Hi Guys,

Aussie here from Downunder..

I thought might ask this question as I am not an expert in this area.

I am about to upgrade my 2008 CVO Springer which is fitted with the SE 110 Motor, and was thinking about upgrading the Factory SE 225 to a more aggresive performance cam. I understand the SE 225 Cam is a good all round Cam with good low end to mid range power. This style of Cam suits my riding and I was wondering what Cam would suit this engine with similar low end to mid range power but with increased performance. I have been told to achieve what I am after, I should also install a SE 50mm TB which includes changing the injectors as well. Are the Factory SE Springs and Lifters suitable if I change the Cam, and if so, what would I replace them with. I am not really interested in changing the heads or pistons to achieve higher compression.. The bike is fitted with a V & H exhaust system and also fitted is the Factory SE high flow air filter.. The ECM has been adjusted for this fittout through the SE Race Tuner.

I have read many discussions on this site which suggets that the Factory SE 110 Motor could realise more performance with suitable upgrades fitted.

Any guidance on this question would be greatly appreciated as I don't know anything about performance upgrades for this engine.

Best regards...

When you have the cam chest apart, check the run out on that crank. If it is way out, you may have to fix this first before doing any cams and things. That crank really throes a monkey ranch in to building plan.  Also, use as many S&S parts as you can. Top quality stuff.

Refreshing your heads is a very good idea. New valve guides, seals, springs, and a valve job is a must I would say. If you bump up the comp a bit you would have a broader choice of cams. The increase in comp is done bu milling more material off the head when they are re freshed.  Also if you are shanging cams, and your crank is with in speck ( you hope ) consider gear drives. Much better set up that way.

Let us know what happens, and for god sakes post some picks, will ya!! ;)

We offer a bolt in cam that will provide what you are looking for. We have done one of the springers with our cam but it had a stock t/b and short shot ex with no baffles so the final numbers where better than stock nothing to get excited about .. well at least not in a good way not great with a very poor ex system. Customer loves the loud pipes though  :-\

Hi GMR,

Thank you for your reply..

Those installs look very good.

In your opinion, which is the better Cam for what I  am trying to achieve, S & S 583, Genesis 577 or even a Woods 777 Cam.

That S & S 583 does look good I must say.

Aussie..

The 777 cam has been used by many but most have commented that in stock form with stock compression it tends to give up some low end power. We have run many cams in the 110 and that is what lead us to make our own cam for it. We have tested the 255 in stage i form back to back against our cam and we make as much low end power and just pull away from the stock 255 . So in the end a cam that will give you the low end power and still pull well on the upper area is a nice bolt in. No matter who's cam you buy. The 583 made great tq but as you see was not a great cam for upper hp . The engine was not real happy if you tried to rev it seat of the pants feel was great if you shorted shifted the engine. I cannot tell you what is the best cam for you as only you know what you like and where you like to ride. Looking at sheets and taking a avg of what you see would get you into a cam that will fill your needs.   :2vrolijk_21:

Hi GMR,

It looks like your Genesis 577 is the best Cam for all round performance which is really what I am after..

Should I install  S & S lifters as well because  of the Cam install. Also, what about the push rods?

Sorry for my ignorance, but is the lower red curve the before reading with the SE 225 Cam and the higher red curve the final reading after installing your Cam and doing your Dyno tune?

Also, how would I purchase your Cam?

Best regards,

Aussie..

No that bottom sheet was not my cam the specs are on the bottom of that sheet That was the SS 583 cam before the tune and after the tune.  The sheet above that was my 577 in a stock 110 cvo. I have other sheets that are showing more power but The 110 tends to be all over the board for compression and power numbers that is a some what low reading compared to others. However you get an idea of the curve looks like on a run of the mill bike.  SPECS ON SHEETS

Hi GMR,

The Genesis 577 Cam looks great.  Just what I am after..

Thank you for your help..

I guess it is a bolt in Cam with nothing else to change (e.g, lifters, pistons e.t.c)..

I thought I might install the SE 50 mm TB as well. Will the stock  SE pushrods be OK with your Cam?

In your opinion, do I need to get a Dyno tune after the install, or is the Factory SE map that is installed now be OK with your Cam?

Best Regards,

Aussie..

with a cam install, change out the cam bearings and I would HIGHLY recommend changing the lifters.  Lifter failures have becoming increasingly common in the 110 and when they do go it can ruining your engine.  You will also need adjustable pushrods.

To summarize
- Cam bearings
- Lifters (S&S are great)
- Adjustable pushrods (S&S make a great product)
- As others said, with the cam chest out, check your crank run-out.  If more than 0.005" your crank needs to be rebuilt.  Factory spec is much higher, but I wouldn't feel confident with a crank that has any more than 0.005" runout
