Oil overfill protection
« on: November 17, 2013, 08:10:15 PM »

I was told that the 110 cu engine has tranny and engine oil overfill protection.  Couldn't find a diagram indicating where the relief valve is.  Is this true or was I mislead?  If true, anyone know where they are?
Reason I am asking.... doing a fall clean and noticed some oily residue on my transmission that seems to come from the top and has worked its way down.  I noticed the oil fill is adjacent to the top of the tranny and suspect my mechanic was sloppy with the oil and spilled it, but was curious whether he overfilled my bike and it released.  The bike doesn't drip oil and the levels are good.
So sad the fall is here and the bike is going away for the winter....
Thanks in advance and cheers.

Told by who, the guy who serviced it?

Is the fill plug tight?  Check the bottom of your air cleaner for oil residue, you may have oil carryover into the filter which will eventually get blown back onto the trans and pipes and possibly the right side cover.  I'm assuming the area you're talking about is on the right side.  On the other side of the trans is a vent hose which can allow excess oil to blow out as well.  As for an overfill prevention system,  I think it's called a competent person doing the fluid change.  It is far from automatic, especially in many Harley shops.

Thanks will do.  Should have said vent.  Residue was found directly behind Oil Fill on top of tranny and down sides.  It was enough to wet fingers but I have never seen drops. Can I suspect then they overfilled and I am seeing discharge?

Unfortunately, have had bad experiences with mechanics of all makes and models, Harley, Auto Dealer, Independent..... so ya get that easier said than done...  or else I wouldn't be on this blog... sometimes you have to take matters into your hands...

If the only place you see the fluid is at and below the fill opening, I'd suspect the person doing the service dripped while trying to fill the trans and didn't clean up very well.  If the plug is secured properly and the o-ring isn't damaged the oil won't blow back out the filler even if overfilled.

Check the fluid level with the dipstick and if OK secure the plug and clean the residue with a mild degreaser.  If the residue doesn't come back after more riding you can most likely assume it was a sloppy fluid change that caused the problem.
