Engine Mods- Need advice
« on: December 15, 2013, 05:49:49 PM »

Have a 2013 CVO breakout and I'm thinking about engine upgrade and have a few questions.
Lets start with where I am now. So far just pipes (basani road rage and PV tuner) making 112 ft lbs TQ after dyno tune. Curve is flat at the peak from 2.5 to 4K rpms.

It seems like from what I've read that I'm going to need extensive mods just to get to the 120/120 range. I'm starting to question if its worth it?
is there the right cam upgrade that retains the tq curve without going with pistons, heads, TB, etc.?
I haven't heard of anyone getting near 120 with just a cam upgrade. Its hard to justify spending thousands of dollars for 8 foot pounds of TQ.

maybe I'm way off here but that's why I'm asking. I would like a nice 120/120 with reliability. can you get there without spending enough to just go buy an S&S crate motor?

Headwork, cam swap, t/body will take you there.

Not a popular opinion, but I don't care about being popular, so.......

Dyno sheets and numbers are for bragging rights.  They're otherwise worthless.  I've ridden bikes with impressive sheets that were miserable to be on.  I've ridden bikes with "disappointing" sheets which were a blast.

I've got the equivalent of a Ducati Monster and a bunch of track days invested in my Night Train.  Know what that bought me?  A fast Harley, which is a slow motorcycle.  Any kid with a couple of grand can buy a used 600cc sportbike and mop the floor with my expensive build.

My CVO is a Stage 1 bike, and looking at all the dyno sheets posted, it'll probably stay that way.  While more power would be nice, the reality is that a cam swap is going to add somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 ft-lbs of torque and 10-15 horsepower.  While that's not insignificant when added to 1100 pounds of bike and rider, unless I'm already in there due to an issue, I don't see that it's worth the effort, nor am I interested in jeopardizing my warranty/ESP over it.  On top of that, the increase in power from a cam is the cheapest increase you'll see.  Every bit more is going to cost exponentially more.

So yeah, while the benefits of a cam are enticing (more power, lower cylinder pressure, cooler motor), I just don't see them being worth the effort and expense for me.

I agree with scott.not a real big deal getting above the 120/120 mark, wont cost thousands and if done right, will be very enjoyable to ride

You will not be able to get where you want  without removing the heads and doing some head work.

You can get where you want without changing pistons, you would be well under 2K for parts labor is another thing.

Not sure where you have been looking but stock heads cam .030 head gasket and tune can get you into the 120 TQ . Those where 100% non ported stock heads. Is it worth the cam change and such to you :nixweiss:  TO get above 113 hp ( approx) you will need a larger t/b. We just completed another 110 with a simple light cut on the deck ( meaning .020) .030 gasket SE 58 out of the box good ex it went 120/123. No head work what so ever.

Check through some of the older posts you will see where we posted up 3 or 4 sheets from cam head work with T/B .

Good Luck!!

Provided the heads are in good working order, guides aren't bypassing enough oil to gum everything up is one thing.

I am sure you have seen enough heads coming off factory assembled engines with 8-12 K  that have started a diamond factory in there....those aren't gonna make the numbers.

Steve's (GMR) suggestion certainly has merit to it and you already have a pipe that can do its part. If you want your cake and it too, I'd recommend having the heads pulled. That changes the ball game. Your compression/cam options are much broader and you know you are going to have a different motorcycle when you do that. The 110 heads with a little work can really turn up the zip and accomplishing your goals is much more certain, not to take anything away from Steve's package and if you are near him, he can provide you with the anything you need if you do decide to go beyond the suggestion he already mentioned.
