They both work. No reason to take out more than you need to.. A insert is not a common item per say where as heli coil is easy to get a hold off. and it comes as a kit . lower cost , and it holds up very well.  Inserts are more of a item that you need other tools to install. You have to drill it out , maybe you do not have the room etc.  Both work well in the end.

What is the reason that Heli-coils seem to be the preferred fix over a threaded insert?

on smaller holes, they work fine (we use them for 1/2 & down)anything above that we`ll use a time sert.time serts are bigger than a heli coil,on a lot of jobs, there isn't room for a time sert.i agree with scott on the EZ outs,on the ex studs,a EZ wont get them out and will break 90% of the time, your better off having the broke stud machined out (we use a EDM to burn broke bolts out)

OK, more curiosity then anything else since the Heli's seem to get the most ink here. I use both, as at least in our area, both are easy to obtain. The inserts i have used were installed with standard drills and taps, compared to the special tap Heli-coils require.

Since you mostly use Heli's, do you have a preference of with or without the tang?

Since Heli's expand when installed, has that been an issue at all?

My source, and they are just down the road a piece:

When employed years ago, doing work machine work for McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft(now owned by Hughes) in the St. Louis metro area, their drawings stated the install of Mil-Spec Part # such and such Heli-Coil Thread Insert, right at the intial point of manufacture in many of the aluminum pieces/parts we'd build.

'Worked on salt water outboards form the late 70s to the mid 90s, when installed properly, they are stronger than the alloy that they are inserted into.

The inserts are new to me.

I use the inserts a fair amount for the 1/4 20 threads. As many times they are wasted or have already had a heli coil. The self tapping insert is a easy item and all you need is a drill bit to install it. Insert is nice if there if more than the "norm" has been pulled out for what ever reason. Both are options really.

Lots of capable guys chimed in. Next time try the PB blaster or some kroil. I also use bees wax for this problem you have with the stud. For a DIY type fix, you can mill the end of that stud to get centered on it, drill it out, put an EZ out in it, get it hot and I use bees wax sometimes on things like this. Unbelievable how well it will penetrate an the stud may turn out with very little effort on the EZ out. If that doesn't work, send it to one of the head porters that have chimed in.

Heat + PB blaster is amazing you can watch it pull into the threads. :2vrolijk_21: Never tried bees wax. James is it hard to squeeze  the wax out of the bee?? :confused5:

Dunno Steve! I get it in a ball about the size of a golf ball fr a machinist buddy. It really is amazing stuff. You would be shocked how well it works and how little effort it takes to let it do its thing. Maybe I'll send you a chunk down when I re up on it.
