FLSTSE Fork Oil Change
« on: April 06, 2014, 02:35:59 PM »

I have searched around the forum and I also  have a service manual but I still have a couple questions about changing my fork oil.
Would you folks suggest half stock/half screaming eagle fluid and also is there a spring that is going to fly out when I pull the cap off each tube?
I changed the fluid in my 2007 FXSTC and there was no spring to deal with.
TIA :2vrolijk_21:

If you just remove the top bolt you won't have to worry about the spring.  There is a large plug that screws into the top of the fork tube that actually holds the spring in, and then there is the top bolt that screws into a threaded hole in the top of that plug.  Remove the chrome cap on the top of the fork tubes, then you will see the bolt.  You install the new oil through that hole in the plug, then reinstall the top bolt (make sure the seal is in place and still good).  If you have a lot of miles, like 50k or more, then you might be better served to remove the forks entirely, tear them down completely, clean and inspect everything, and then reassemble with new bushings and seals.  Otherwise, yes you can just drain and refill.  Let the forks drain for quite awhile to get as much of the old oil out as possible.  I think I let mine drain for about an hour while I went inside to eat dinner.
