Longer shocks for flhrse5
« on: March 18, 2014, 05:34:12 PM »

Hi, im thinking of fitting longer shocks to my bike to give a little more suspension travel/comfort as it is definitely a much harsher ride than my 11 road king classic fitted with air shocks.
Am I right in believing that the non cvo bikes ie: road king and ultra etc are fitted with 13 inch as opposed to my current bikes 12 inch??
anyway i am guessing that i can change shock length to 13" without any other mods??
another benefit for me would be a little increase in ground clearance when cornering.
I would appreciate any input or suggestions from anyone who has done or knows of anyone who has done a similar upgrade/mod.
regards
Paul

Have a look at the Progressive 944 shocks.  They provide for a 12" ride height and claim to have the same travel as a 13" shock.  I installed these along with the Progressive monotubes on my 2008 FLHRSE4 and it greatly improved the ride.  The stock air shocks are terrrible!

Are you sure the problem is coming from the back.
I find more issues due to the front suspension.  I changed it out to Progressive monotubes which are an improvement but not as good as previous touring models.

You will have to raise the front end up to. The front ends are lowered one inch. The ride will bounce you all over if you don't raise both up. Billy

A longer travel shock with adjustable ride height would be ideal.

Stock shocks with 2" of travel for the CVO's and 3" for the non CVO's is not enough IMO.

I'm currently running a 4 1/2" travel shock that is adjustable, albeit air ride it is air over oil and is super smooth. When getting into the corners I add air to stiffen them up. Just an option.

thanks for your reply I am sure it is the rear end not the front because when I bought the cvo last summer I still had my road king classic so was able to make a direct comparison between the two, my classic was much too soft on the front where as the cvo was much more like what I was looking for especially under braking...
adjusting the rear end on the cvo it goes from too soft to too hard and no inbetween, and I think this is amplified by the lack of travel in the shock itself.

I have just sent an email to a reputable suspension specialist who are not so far from my home who can offer a custom built setup for me so it is good to know that I can maybe use a shock that is outside of the moco,s normal perimeters.
imho 2" suspension travel is not enough for some of the uk,s bumpy roads!!

I had the similar issues on my FLHRSE4 and went with Progressive 944 in the back and Progressive Monotubes in the front.  World of difference!
