Opinions needed on older bike purchase
« on: September 07, 2014, 11:03:13 AM »

Hello to all,

Due to a financial meltdown back in 2010 I have been without a bike since then.  Out of all the bikes I have owned (6 Harleys) over the years, the bike a relate too most was a 2004 SE Deuce I purchased new in 2004, put 30K in less than three years on the bike. Now I'm back on top of things, and in the hunt for a bike and the 2004 se Deuce (Cobalt Blue) is in my cross-hairs.  My only delima is even though I can find a few for sale with less than 10K miles I am worried about replacement parts now and in the future.  Yes I know finding painted tins are like finding bigfoot, but I am more concerned with replacement electrical and motor parts. Please wiegh in and give your in-site on parts availability now and in the next 4 or 5 years for this bike.

Thanks

I've got a buddy...still gets parts for his '97 at the dealer (for the most part)....often has to order them in though.....and the aftermarket has a bigger/better damn near everything that may need replacing.

Well, for me I would not buy a touring bike that is older than 2009, due to frame, brakes and other improvements. Since a 2004 SE is not a touring model, you got to get what you like. Others will know how hard parts are to obtain for a 2004. I would think the newer like model you could find would be better as far as locating parts. I know some members on here have bought up certain spare parts to have on hand just in case for there beloved older CVO rides.

I wouldn't think you would have any problems at all.

My wife rides an 03 Fat Boy (non -CVO) that we have owned since new and have not had any problems getting the things we have needed. As far as painted parts, I would get them from a vendor that supports the forum. Lots of folks on here are very happy with Extreme Dimension.

If you can get a really good price on the Bike you like, you can afford to rebuild brakes, wheel bearings, shocks maybe a motor
Hop up/rebuild and still have money left over. Most repairs can be done at home, even removing and installing motor and transmission.  The actual builds can be done at a good shop. This way you have what you want

Older SE bikes with low miles are behind every bush. If you like it .....buy it!!!

I just did the same thing.

I bought a 2005 SEEG new. Rode it for 5 year and 37k miles, sold it. Bought 2 different bikes after that, but missed my SEEG.

Went out and bought a replacement 2005 SEEG , same color , 24k miles , excellent condition. Rides like brand new and has a 6 speed.  It's just like I never sold it.

Don't hesitate, just do it. There are some great low miles well taken care of CVO's out there.
