Memory Size in 6.5 Infotainment ?
« on: April 07, 2014, 12:34:00 PM »

Does anyone know how much storage memory is in (or included) in the 6.5 GT Infotainment Center?

I don't believe any in built in.  You can hook up whatever size USB stick drive you like to the USB input.  My CVO came with a 16 gig stick.

Sorry I wasn't a little clearer.  There has to be some internal memory inside the 6.5GT to store trips, routes.  I wonder how many trips can be stored before it pukes.

In typical Harley fashion they don't seem to list any real specifications in the manuals for the system, at least none I could find, so your guess is about as good as anyone's guess at this point.  I would suggest calling H-D Customer Service, but I would hate to get your hopes up.  Maybe someone in the aftermarket will figure it out and let everyone know; Harley can't be expected to know the details and specs of all the stuff they buy from vendors and sell to their customers.  ???

Btw, the real storage hog for any GPS device I'm familiar with is the actual map data, not the custom routes.  Route files are relatively small and are usually measured in KB, not MB.  The potential problem won't be how many custom routes you can save, but how long will the system work before the new updated maps become too big to load to the device.  That's a common problem with stand alone GPS units over time, and it is what makes it necessary to throw away perfectly good old devices and replace them with new devices.  We used to call this planned obsolescence back in the day.  It's a pain to have to throw away a perfectly good $100 GPS unit and replace it with a new bigger $200 GPS unit, but when you're talking about a built in system that carries a price tag in the thousands of dollars it goes from being a pain to being a deal breaker for someone like me.  I've never sprung for the factory built in GPS in any vehicle I've ever bought for that very reason.

Thanks for the reply Jerry.  IMHO when HD "listened" to the riders developing Mt. Rushmore, seems they fell short of listening to the riders who actually use the navigation system.  I'm learning HD made it very hard to plot routes and trips- but I'll find a way.
Does HD really have to squeeze every nickel out of its customers so much they can't allow open commmunication with Garmin and their software.  Really HD!!
So for now, I'll wander the countyside knowing where I am on the planet.  Keep the shiny side up!

Ok, so I call HD customer service about the infotainment center to ask about memory.  Told me they have the specifications but they are not published to the public.  What does that mean?  I can't imagine what is so secret about memory.  I was told you can store 3 trips with up to 9 waypoints- so basically, if you want to use a Navigation system buy a Garmin and mount it over your 6.5GT Boom Box.  The nav system is near useless

It sure is - unless you just want to enter a destination and let it guide you there.  Probably works OK in that case but that is not the way I use my GPS 99.99% of the time.

Isn't that ironic (funny)... how far technology has come but how much remains the same. Wasn't the original OEM GPS from MoCo somewhat limited in the same way back in the days it came in the radio?? The things that make you go "hmmmmm".
