New programmable Marelli ECM from Harley--41000012A
« on: April 04, 2014, 02:35:55 PM »

Saw this and thought it was interesting.  Would only apply to a few of us specifically but even generally it's an interesting topic.

Looks like a 2013 release but Harley dropped a new programmable ECM as a replacement part for the old Marelli ECMs.  From what little I've been able to find out so far it comes with the bare ECM (no tune of any kind).  It either has with it or dealers can download (not sure which, couldn't find out for sure) a few base maps; but only a few.  So count on having it tuned.  But it is a plug and play Marelli ECM that can be dyno tuned.  That's a significant advance.

It's supposed to have the range to handle larger builds than the old Marelli ECMs could.  It's also supposed to be able to monitor and work with o2 sensors for fuel metering/monitoring.

For those of us that have already used or have considered the Thundermax or S&S or other alternatives to updating an old Marelli bike this is a potential alternative.  It's relatively inexpensive (by Harley standards) at about $500.  You'd still have the quirks of the Marelli throttle body and have the cam position sensor still on board that the the other upgrade kits do away with.  But this is potentially a cost effective option for keeping an old bike on the road or accomplishing engine upgrades on an old bike that might have otherwise not been done.

You will find it looks a whole lot like an S&S unit and so does the software.

That's interesting too.  In an admittedly quick search earlier today I couldn't find any reference to whom the OE might be so was wondering who was supplying.  From the one crappy picture I found my guess was the S&S unit but that was just a guess.

You know who the OE is to S&S or if they cook their own?

I know that HD ran out of ECM's (about 2 years ago) and they went to MM and the cost was to high, so they turned to S&S to support the old bikes. This is why we discontinued our MM tuning software for those bikes. If you have an ECM failure the only option left is a new ECM from S&S at this point and it comes with tuning software so it didn't make sense to continue the MM product any longer for us.

I tune MM bikes on my dyno with their stock ECM.  The computer power is low but the problems I run into is more on the mechanical side.  Not computer problems.  Sloped out throttle shafts, linkages, old sensors, dirty injectors...... are what have me chasing my tail most of the time.  The dual throats have their problems on bigger builds.  Just can't get the air in with single runners.

A TC MM needs to be above 250 to take the cold idle out of the question.  Doesn't leave much of a window to tune in.  More tables would help with some of this but cant/ won't do anything for a throttle plate that won't close the same way twice in a row because of slopped linkage.

I haven't seen the S&S software but my curiosity is up.

What a wonderful world it would be, if Harley would go with S&S Cranks and Lifters in the TCs :nixweiss:

FWIW, S&S also offers a single plenum throttle body for the M&M bikes so you shouldn't have to deal with the problems you're having anymore, Jason.  :) I have 2 M&M bikes on the way in for tunes and one of them had a bad ECM so we'll see how smooth the install goes. S&S says the blank ECM will not require taking the ECM to the dealership to get the initial flash. The other bike I have to tune has an HPI dual plenum TB but we may end up trying out the S&S single plenum unit on one or both of the bikes here. Should be interesting and as the OP stated, it gives the M&M guys more options and yes, they can utilize O2 sensors now.

Barrie Gerolamy used to offer some (relatively) cost effective options for M&M throttle body upgrades.  Just tried to look at their website to see what the current options might be and got a dead link and not much info in other search.  If anyone knows BCG's current status please share?

I'd heard they went tits up and then I had heard they were still around and still had the throttle body you're talking about. If their website is gone I'd say they are indeed gone. I could be wrong but seems like I remember them changing their business over to mostly selling head porting supplies??? Did I just dream that up or was there something to that??

Found this with a quick search.

If you click on the orange engine I believe the next picture over is a picture of their dual plenum TB and it was posted this last October.

Dakota Kid in North Dakota also opens throttle bodies. He did the one on my '01. Ultra.

His name is Andrew and he does good work.

I didn't realize Dakota kid was still in the game? I tuned a nasty '01 RG 95" he did the TB on last year.
