garage door opener
« on: October 01, 2013, 05:28:55 PM »

I sold my 08 which had the transmitter for the garage door opener.  I have the receiver, can I just buy a new transmitter for it and connect it to my 2014 limited?

Yes, you can buy just the transmitter and then pair it to your existing receiver.

I finally got my bike back from the dealer after a long winter storage.  While it was there I had them install a garage door transmitter.  I went through the instructions to program them to each other, including clearing the memory from the old receiver, and can't make it work.  Do I have to program it with the front fairing off to see if  the new transmitter's light is blinking properly? :confused5: BTW this is a 2014 Limited.

I might do that, but I don't think it should be necessary.  I assume you paid the dealership to install the transmitter.  If the receiver worked fine with the previous bike, but won't work with the new transmitter, the odds are pretty good that they didn't do something correctly on the install OR the transmitter is defective.  I'd recommend that you take the receiver to the dealership and have them pair the new transmitter to your receiver.  Then if they can't do it, it will be up to them to go back into the fairing and verify they wired it correctly and the transmitter is working.

The receiver worked fine with the old bike, so I think I'll do what you suggested and take the receiver to the dealer and let them get it right.  Thanks for the help.

I'm attaching a highlighted copy of the latest installation sheet that was revised for 2014.  The HDLAN bikes require a connection harness and don't just splice into the headlight wiring like the older models.  If the dealership didn't follow the new instructions I can understand why it doesn't work.

Print this sheet out and take it with you in case they don't seem to understand what you're talking about.  Wouldn't be the first time a dealership wasn't up to speed on new model information.

While cleaning my bike today I took off the left side cover and saw the dealer put, what looks like the garage door transmitter, under that cover.  The instructions says an LED light should blink on the transmitter while holding down the button on the receiver, nothing happens.  I called the dealer that installed it, they are looking into it.  I'm sure they can get it to work.

In my experience with installing four of these (on pre-2014 bikes) you key-on the bike to enable the headlight. Flash the low-high-low beam, and a small green LED on the transmitter's circuit board (embedded in the clear potting compound) will briefly light if it's properly powered up and receiving the high beam's wiring voltage.

If the receiver's programming button is pushed (its red LED flashes) while doing the transmitter procedure above, the red LED on the receiver will stop flashing when a signal has been received and the transmitter's code programmed in the receiver's memory.

I got the whole deal (GDO) with my '09 SE Ultra.  When I sold it last November,  I kept the receiver in my garage already installed.  As part of the deal on my new Street Glide,  I had them add a GDO transmitter.  They did that and I had no problems getting it to work. :drink:
