Detachable backrest
« on: April 03, 2014, 02:31:14 PM »

First what a great source of knowledge is here, Thanks for the help. Anyone use a backrest for the passenger, if so, which style. I would like to not have it on all the time but easy to put back on when needed and not take away from the bike when it is not on. Thanks in advance.

I have and use the HD sissy bar upright and HD backrest pad.  Requires the purchase of some docking hardware (by HD of course) that replaces the stock bolts (2 on each side) that run through the fender strut.  The docking hardware stays behind but the back rest and sissy bar are quick detach.

I use the same set up as jsbrumfi but with the sun downer seats its a good system and you can covert the bike to a sole ride in a matter of minutes

X3, most of the time I run with stock seat, but when my wife rides I switch out the seat with the sundowner and HD backrest.

I've got the detachable set up on mine, I also grabbed the sundowner seat which gives the bride a softer ride. I went with the stock back rest that matches the colour of the breakout.

One thing I will share and is worth noting, the riding position is a little more upright than what we were used to from the Fatboy - I'd suggest considering the adjustable fitting available for the sissy bar which would give you a few degrees of rearward adjustment.

My wife had quite a few complaints after the first ride on the Breakout; lasted all of about 20 minutes with her saying no way could she handle it. At that time I only had added the standard back rest. So I pretty much set out to try and make this work because I do like riding with my wife. This is what I came up with it might not be the prettiest but it works and she was comfortable. I used the Harley adjustable back rest; this allows her to lean back just a bit more than the standard which was a huge help because she felt like she was pushed on top of me with the old set up. Second her complaint was her legs we way too cramped and bent up so I found the peg relocation kit; not specced to work with Breakout but works fine on mine. The last thing was the seat and I found this one on ebay; I had to uncover the front and shave some foam away. Just took a ride this past weekend of about 2 hours stopping once in the middle and she was happy. Here is a pic of the set up and the part numbers are as follows.

Detachable Adjustable Backrest side Plates 53994-11
Sissy Bar 52540-09A
Pad 51642-06
Peg Relocation kit 50787-09
Seat 51812-09

Looks like some good solutions, I might have to switch to the adjustable side plate as well.

Great solution! I deliberately made sure the ride was very uncomfortable for my BSR to justify adding a bagger to the stable! :D
