3M clear bra (Charlotte, NC area installers)
« on: April 17, 2014, 07:34:45 AM »

I am looking to get some paint protection for the front fairing, and lowers. For the ones with the paint protectors, are you happy with the product?
I see a few shops in the area Charlotte Glass, East Coast Window Tinting, AutoShield, and XPEL

A few years ago I had professionally installed the 3M product on my front fairing, front of saddlebags and side covers. It wasn't a disaster but I wouldn't do it again. It can never look as good as a nice wax that brings out the colors.

Wow, a lot of negative replies. Maybe I need to rethink the paint protection.

3M clear film to protect paint gets the job done but on most cars and motorcycles the factory just places it in low out of the way places on the vehicle because of the reasons stated. Even properly applied it can't compare to a freshly and properly detailed bike.  I would say no to putting it on the front of my fairing.  Look at it this way, a man needs a reason to buy a new bike every few years and when I get a couple rock chips or road dings after 5 or 6 years and realize what custom paint jobs from the MOCO go for I use that flimsy excuse to justify a new bike to the wife.  :huepfenlol2:  When my wife's GT500 got a few years on it we wanted to freshen up the paint because she loved the car and wouldn't trade it no matter what......we ended up spending 10K for a complete high end re-do.  Me...I'd rather just trade in for a new one.

I 've had it on my fairing for 4 years now and still looks great after 60k.....I think it works best on dark colors.  It is important that it is installed properly.

Have the   http://www.motorcycle-armor.com/   on my saddle bags and is a great product.

For me this is a must if you tour a lot....no paint chips!

As long as people don't fall for the "virtually invisible" advertising hype, and as long as people are more interested in the protection aspect of the product and less in looking cool while parked, these products can be very beneficial when applied to areas that are subject to a lot of road debris or rubbing from things like passengers legs or luggage.  I certainly wish I had installed it on my lowers back when I bought the bike, but there again it wasn't all that available back then.

Even if someone decides they don't want this on their fairing for appearance reasons, I'd definitely recommend installing it on the lowers.

I've had my 3m protection on my bike since new in 09 BUT after that long being on I've heard that if you take it off for whatever reason, it may damage the clear coat, not willing to try, but it's done it's job so far.

There are several YouTube videos out showing the installation and removal of such protective films.  My only advise is that you start with really clean hands.  Putting on flat surfaces is easy but it gets more difficult when installing on contours.  I have installed several of these kits on different high performance aircraft without any issues.  Prepping the surface is extremely important also.  You will need a decent medium density rubber squeegee, a spray bottle with distilled or deionized water with a couple of spoonfuls of dish soap and a spray bottle with distilled  or deionized water mixed with 70% iso alcohol.  Once the film has been installed make sure that you have squeegeed out all the water from underneath the film.  Let it dry for 8 to 12 hours before you ride the bike and in a couple of days apply a coat of a good quality wax to prevent the film from yellowing.  Personally, I would do the job myself before allowing someone else to do it.  Only you are as anal about your bike and how it looks so you are probably the best person to do the job.
