Installing Wild Ones and HD heated grips
« on: July 13, 2014, 10:27:14 PM »

Ok, I have a set of 612's to go on my bike and plan on doing it myself. I do have the heated grips and read somewhere that the new bars will need reamed out to make everything fit right. Has anyone on this board done their own? How far into the new bars to I need to have them reamed out for the HD grips to fit properly?
I'd like to make this a one day project and planned to have the bars done before I start tearing everything apart.

I had a shop do mine, yes you do need to ream them alittle, and i will tell you you need to cut between an 1/4 to 1/2" off the left bar also or the grip and switch housing will not meet up with the 1.25" swell of the bars and leave a gap in which you will see the 1in bar end.

I didn't have heated grips on my 08 when I installed the bars from them but I did notice that the left bar had to be cut and I did not like the center being pressed fir to a small size. That made installing the wires much more difficult.  There was concern about chaffing a wire in that tight set up so I enlarged it a bit and made a teflon bushing piece to protect the wires.  Nice feel to the bars but I would not get a bar that is reduced that has TBW again.  Hope it works out for you.

I'm hoping my stock left bar mounted Garmin will cover it that gap.

I got a response to an email I sent WO about it and they said the bars won't need reamed,,,, I guess we'll find out on Thurs.

I had the 575's installed and it required no reaming or extra length cables, not sure on the 612's. I forgot about trimming the left side so I have about 1/4" gap between the control housing and the step up to 1-1/4" on the bar diameter. It only bothers me when I really look at it but I plan on fixing that issue sometime when I have nothing better to do. I may make an escutcheon to clamp on the bar to cover the gap but then I would need to put one on the right side as well to make it look right.  Make sure your Garmin mount will accommodate the larger diameter bar before you decide not to trim it.

In retrospect, a little time spent trimming that bar would have made a much cleaner install. the irony is I own a machine shop and have at least one of every kind of saw a man would ever need to make that simple cut.  :-\

I got them done. Doing that Garmin was a bitch because of all the damn plugs in it so I did that wire first. Here's a pix of what runs through the bars just for the Garmin

Good news is that I did not have to do a damn thing to the bars. No reaming or cutting of the left side because the GARMIN mount covers up that space.
