Replace inner cam bearings or not?
« on: May 24, 2014, 03:13:46 AM »

I'm planning on changing cams in my '13 Ultra this weekend, and had planned on replacing the inner cam bearings while I'm at it.  I've got 10,000 miles on it.  At the dealership today, a parts guy said this is unnecessary because HD switched to upgraded bearings in 2013.  Even if that's true, I would think it's a good idea to replace the bearings while I've got the cam chest open anyway.

Are the inner cam bearings on the '13 CVOs really upgraded?  This is news to me.  If so, is it overkill and a waste of time to replace them at this point?

Thanks for your input

Supposed to be upgraded to the Torrington full compliment style bearing. But for only about $20 for the parts why not change them out while you're in there.

The 2013 and later CVO110 engines are supposed to have the Torrington style bearings from the factory, along with the upgraded lifters with the larger roller bearing.  As ultrafxr said, the bearings are relatively cheap so I'd be inclined to replace them anyway since you're already in there.

Btw, this will give you an opportunity to report back to the forum exactly what inner bearings and lifters are actually in your 2013.  Some don't seem to think the MoCo has been installing the upgraded parts as shown in that tech forum page and the parts manuals.

That's good to know.  I can't fathom why The Mothership would wait this long to replace such a vital part that costs so little.  Seems almost criminal.

I knew the lifters had been upgraded, but I am planning on changing those out while I'm at it, too.  Everyone I've mentioned this to said to replace the lifters, regardless.

Thanks, guys!

I've got the lifters out of my 2013 engine. Can I tell what they are with my untrained eye?

Sounds like $20 to replace them now or $$$$ to replace them later... odds are in favor of spending the $20 now IMO. :nixweiss: And to be honest I'd probably look at what was an upgrade/better than putting back MoCo parts.
