Leaking Front Brake Reservoir
« on: November 29, 2014, 10:11:45 AM »

Just wondered if anyone had experienced this?

I dismantled the front brake / handlebar switch assembly the other day to remove the handlebar mounted turn signal as I'm moving them onto the aux lamp brackets. I reassembled ok but then noticed a few days later that brake fluid was collecting underneath and just about to drip down. I wiped it all off and checked the two screws on the cover for tightness. I've just checked again and I still have a slight leak collecting underneath from somewhere. I can't see how I've caused this as I didn't touch the reservoir itself only the switch and lever handlebar brackets. The only thing that did happen was that as I was removing the brackets the lever and reservoir fell down but I caught it before it hit anything. This disoriented it slightly meaning it was on its side for a split second but I thought nothing of it.

Before I investigate further I wondered if anyone had had the same problem.

Ya, mine did that too. Just position the bike so that the lid can be completely removed so that you can clean the rubber seal with some brake clean & also wipe any excess from the reservoir itself.
Reinstall everything & you should be good to go.

Good Luck

What he said.  The most likely cause is the cover gasket, so that would be the first thing to check out.  And btw, when you reinstall the cover and gasket do not over tighten the screws.  They only require about ten INCH pounds of torque.  Over tightening can distort the gasket and actually cause leaks.

Are you sure the master clyinder isn't overfilled?  Mine is happy if it is slightly below the "fill" line.  Try cleaning the rubber gasket and the master clyinder lip again.  Just tighten the screws till they stop and then just a little tug after.

Thought I needed a new gasket too after mine leaked -turned out to be overfilled slightly.  Regrettably, I had already bought a new cap and gasket (HD doesn't sell the rubber gasket/baffle separately, so you have to get the cap too...if I recall, about $60).

I've ordered a new rubber gasket. You can get them individually for just over £8 ($13). I'll make sure it's not over filled and everything is clean and hopefully that'll fix it. If not its due its 10k service early in 2015 (weather permitting) so I'll get them to look at it then. Thanks

Still waiting for the new seal (transport strikes in Belgium!). Just checked the leaking reservoir and it appears to be seeping up out of the two screws? I have checked them for tightness and they are ok. I don't think it's over filled as it was ok before I removed the assembly from the bars?
