Cruise control just wants to go...
« on: July 10, 2014, 04:58:09 AM »

Cruise control will open the throttle as needed to maintain speed but will not retard throttle.   For instance, as I top a hill, the throttle remains at the last position needed to maintain speed going up hill and the bike continues to accelerate.  A bump of the grip releases the throttle back to normal cruise operation like the cable was sticking which is all the answer I get from the dealer.   Dealer lubed the cable and there is no indication of sticking with manual operation.  Any suggestions or thoughts?

Did the dealer lube all three cables?  Throttle cables as well as the cruise control cable?  Often the dealer "techs" only lube the throttle cables and forgets (or doesn't know enough) to lube the cruise control cable also...   :nixweiss:

The cable operated cruise controls have a separate cable just for the cruise that runs from the module directly to the throttle linkage.  As sadunbar already mentioned, some dealership "techs" don't seem to understand that lubing the regular two throttle cables doesn't do anything to help a sticking cruise cable.

Disconnect the cable from the module and operate it by hand to see if it's binding.  The problem could be the actual cable, or internal to the module.  BTW, you need to find a better dealership and tech.  They have test equipment that will let them check out the entire system, if they care to blow the dust off it and use it.  They should never send a customer away with some BS when they have a complaint about a throttle sticking; it's a safety issue.

That description is the dictionary definition of a sticking cable.  Think of it like this Doc; as you climb a grade the throttle position has to be advanced to add fuel/power to maintain the current speed against that grade.  So the throttle cable and the cruise cable is advanced.

If the cable is sticking inside the housing you have the problem described as once that grade is climbed the throttle position can not release or relax.  So when you're no longer climbing the grade the bike will actually accelerate.

The shop should have found it.  It's an easy find and fix if they think of the system.  My experience has been that once those cables start getting sticky no lube nor any other service will fix them.  Time to replace a cable.  Fortunately they are relatively easy to change and relatively inexpensive to purchase.

Been there done that.  Its called a Stepper Cable.  Replace it - its about $30.  Nothing more exciting than a "stuck throttle".

Had a throttle stick open on me once in the 60s,.. I've never let it had it happen again.
I was on my 68 BSA Bonnie on a dirt road I had stopped and was pulling of again in 1st then whammy it took off. I was twisting the throttle back and forth frantically with no resalts. I pulled in the clutch and the motor raced,.. I couldn't turn the ignition off as you may know it's on the left hand side of the front of the tank mounted by the yoke.
I'm talking a hairy 30sec 650cc dirt road 1st gear throttle stuck open BSA out of control ride. You gays know the drill.

To cut a long story short, it unjammed as sudden as it jammed as I checked it over I found it was the lock nut on the cable adjuster had loosened off. The adjuster separated from the cable jacket and caught up holding the throttle open. Since then I allways make a point of checking the cables.
REMEMBER a stuck cable can KILL!!! Be safe
