I took a few days planning to ride into northern Maine along the Canadian border last week. Packed my tripod and camera gear to photograph landscapes along the Fish River heading north to Fort Kent and Madawaska (the northernmost town on the four corners run). As it turned out I never got that far north. I was seeking open roads and less traffic, my CVO is still new and we needed to bond a bit. This was the certainly the correct route to accomplish this – running the Maine Williwacks is enjoyable… Below are a few recent exposures of my scoot pre-trip.
Stopped near Sherman on I-95 and took a panoramic view of distant Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park – the attachment is an excerpt from the overall image. This is the highest peak in Maine at 5,269 feet. It had been an excellent morning with great riding so far. However, at this stop it started to rain. Looked like the forecast was one day off - I’d expected it to be clearing with an occasional chance of rain. I had a dry bag along to cover my photography equipment, carried in a backpack and tied off in lieu of a BSR, so I secured my cameras and lenses against the weather and continued north. I was in rain for the next five hours.
I was around forty miles from the Canadian border still riding in the rain. Traveling into the storm I didn’t expect things to improve, so I abandoned the border plan and headed east to Presque Isle. Later stopping in Bangor for the evening, I decided to head south and over to Rangeley Lakes to ride in the western mountain region the next day. This got me into nice weather, warm and sunny, downright hot at times. I made only one stop to break out the camera gear – this was at Screw Auger Falls in Grafton Notch State Park. Below are a few HDR exposures from this stop.
Because I’ve been working out of state for multiple months this was the first opportunity I’d had to really get out and run some distance on my Ultra Classic. It’s big and heavy in use around town, but on the open road I was duly impressed. The suspension and exhaust changes done over the winter made this scoot even more of a pleasure to ride. I logged 837 miles in my travels over two days.
