Oops...pulled 'do not remove' hex plug from oil pan.
« on: August 02, 2014, 10:25:57 AM »

A acquaintance stopped by to do an oil change on my lift table on his holiday and pulled the 'don't remove' hex plug from the oil pan. I had the 5/16 hex out on the bench from working the air compressor and he grabbed it and pulled the hex plug. I didn't realize what he'd done until I gave him a new o-ring and he said there wasn't one on it when he removed the plug.

The only reference to it that I could find in the manual was on the engine oil change page and the trans oil change page....'do not remove'.

Can we just put sealant on it and put it back in?

What to use for sealant? If I don't have it, we can get it.....we have to go to Lordco anyway...he has 3 litres of oil.....and one of tranny fluid....oops!

As long as he didn't bugger up the threads it isn't a problem.  That plug is just there to close off where the pan is drilled for the oil pickup.  People who have installed dash mounted oil temp gauges actually use that hole for the temp sensor.

It would be best to clean the old sealant off and apply new.  It's needed because you're dealing with a pipe thread, not a gasketed or O-ringed straight fitting like the drain plugs.  Any sealant meant for automotive oil pressure sending units or similar items would be fine.  I can't think of the exact Permatex number I've used in the past, but an auto parts place should be able to steer you in the right direction.

Permatex 14.  They've got several thread sealants actually.  14 is my preference for automotive pipe threads.

Have even used silver spray paint on gaskets to help hold the seal.

No biggie on removing it- Myself and many others remove it when we do an oil change using the Scavenger.

I use the Permatex High Temp Thread Sealant...I thought it was the same as the one Harley branded one they recommend in the service manual where they talk about the Hex Plug (3-99 or 1-99 in the 2009 Touring Manual, I believe).

What torque do you use when you reinstall the hex bolt?

Manual says 18-22 ft/lbs with Loctite Pipe Sealant with Teflon (HD Part #99818-97) (see Section 3-99 in the 2009 Service Manual).

I go to the light side of that, as the plug was recessed in a couple threads already.
