Oil leak at Transmission to engine interface
« on: September 08, 2014, 10:48:49 AM »

Hi all,
Great after finally sorting the Compensator issue on my 07 CVO RK once and for all, had 2 weeks no problem riding, now have a oil leak on the left hand side of the bottom edge of the join between the engine crankcase and the transmission by the oil pan, anyone had this and if so was there an easy fix or is it a case of separating the tranny from the crankcase in order to change out the gasket (Harley part no 35607-06).  Not happy having just had the primary apart. Ride safe.

Hi all
Does anyone know if the gasket between the transmission and crankcase (07 CVO RK) can be replaced easily or do I have to tear half the bike apart.
Ride safe.

Well, after having been misinformed about the availability of the SE cases for T124 motors from S&S even though I had triple checked and was in fact told by two people from S&S and then just a misunderstanding between my S&S rep and I, although that is not something I have not see as a problem, I suppose one could use that as a reason to go to the external oil lines that are used with the T2 cases at least to avoid tearing the engine down, maching the T2 cases for internal lines and voiding your warranty from S&S, I do understand the desire to keep the oil lines internal for many folks. I happen to run the SE cases on my own Road Glide with the S&S T124 and we will be ordering another T124 with SE cases from S&S in the low compression version over the next day or two but to answer your question, yes, it does appear the gasket has been compromised and would require installing a new one which means your primary work will need to be redone also. It would also be a great time for you to install a 124 also. :^)

Just be sure your diagnosis is correct.  :o
The interface (gasket/seal) is pretty well located, and secured. You may want to remove your crank position sensor, hook up an air line with an air gun, use low pressure, and pressurize the case. This should help verify your leak area. Do this before anything else.

Outstanding advice.  It would be unusual (but possible) to have a tranny/case leak.

I've never pressurized a case that way but have considered it a couple times.   So assuming a good regulator what is a safe pressure to test with?

Thanks for the advice John, will give that a try, did show to a local dealer tech ( one that I trust ) and he thought it was the internal oil gasket, but he did say how rare that was, he could only remember having to change one since HD went to the internal oil passages over the external oil lines, just my luck!!

I used this method back in the day to find: Loose/leaky Timkin inserts, cracks, and misc. gasket leaks in Evo cases. Always led me to the problem areas quickly, and precisely. Just start by cleaning the suspected area.
I've used 60 lbs., and don't dwell on the trigger for too long. Can be done on and off the trigger as well. Second set of eyes doesn't hurt (use safety glasses). You'll know when it's working.
You WON'T blow out any seals, or gaskets. Pressure will vent through the breather system as well.
John
Remember, early Twinkies had a sealer problem at the rear case half seam blocked by the trans. case.  ;)

And FWIW,
This is why I like to run a different colored oil in each hole. 8)

Thanks John, that's very useful info, I also run different oils in Engine/Tranny/primary, The oil in the transmission is bright Red in colour so I know it is engine oil leaking, thanks for your help will let you know how I get on. Mark.
