Very interesting...   

For over 30 years I was an executive in a tier one "engineered to order" company whose primary customers were the worlds leading automotive and aerospace companies.  We did not supply a standard product, but rather every order was a custom engineered solution with the average order value of many millions of dollars.

It was always quite incredible to sit in concept and design review meetings to witness the amazing minds of the engineering staff as they went thru the process of finding "manufacturable solutions" to complex tasks, often starting with a completely clean sheet of paper.
