How do you know when a compensator is going
« on: September 08, 2014, 10:07:46 AM »

I do not know much about the comp, but would like to know what are the signs of one going out.

I do have a problem sometimes when starting on a hot motor the primary will make a sound that I can describe best as. "THAWACK"   Usually it will start on the next try.  By the way this is usually on a hot day with a lot of heat in the motor when I might stop to get gas or just for a quick run into a store.  It almost seems the motor is stopping on a compression stroke and as the air in the cyl get hot it raises the compression to a level that is to much for the starter to push.   I thought the comp releases would let that pressure out before your starter winds.   Sometimes is will backfire out the TB.  After that it starts

I had two replaced on mine.

Seems to start by kicking the starter which sounds like what you described.

You will also hear a clunk from the primary sometimes when you shut it off.

I also notice a slight chain rattle when cruising steady at 2k rpm.

Hope this help...good luck

I have same symptoms on my 124". Did you find out what it is? And recently, he wont start unless  i twist a throttle a bit.

I have a 2014 CVO Limited that ticks when driving but the noise goes away when I pull my clutch in, I don't know what a compensator is, only done 1500 miles, should I be worried and take it to the dealership. I have just presumed it was normal.

Regards as always

I have a loud clanking noise when idling on a hot motor...when idling prior to putting in garage, or on a hot start
some difficulty finding neutral
no problem starting

All the noises described are noises I've heard before.....and I'm sure I'll hear them again.
