2014 FLHXS, Cat header removed, do I need to re tune?
« on: September 30, 2014, 10:15:58 AM »

This bike was bought slightly used and has stage 1 AC, Street Cannon (HD) mufflers, and Super Race Tuner + mapped. Runs strong, sounds good, gets 44-48 MPG.
I just replaced the head pipe with a stock reworked headpipe to avoid local regulations.
Its somewhat louder.  Do I need to get a re-tune or will the O2 sensors be able to handle this slight change?

Phil,
Since these bikes come very lean and run hot because of it, retuning a bone stock bike improves throttle response, smoothness, and radiant heat.

That said when you increase air into and out of the engine (a/c and pipe) retuning has even more dramatic improvement over the stock calibration.

You will find dealers without the ability to recalibrate (Dyno tune) will assert there is no need for tuning and the O2 sensors will take care of stage 1 changes.
Yet those dealers with dynos will readily tell you there is a measurable improvement in virtually all aspects of riding the bike when properly tuned.

Bob, thanks. I'm not sure I explained the situation clearly.  It was tuned with the stage 1 when new.  All I did was remove the cat.  If that's what you understood, then I will get a tune soon.

Thanks
