Telescoping tourpack lid tether
« on: October 30, 2014, 05:13:34 PM »

Rode to meet up with a few buddies last night, I got to the pub and opened the lid to my tourpack to put away from sunglasses and i heard a "pop" and saw the lid fall back on the hinges and almost hit my saddle bags. The force of the lid cracked the tourpack bottom at both hinges. The BS tether had snapped

I bought the bike (2011 SERG) to HD today and they were very sympathetic. The service manger is first going to run it through the extended warranty company and then to HD if that does not work. Someone is going to buy me a new tourpack, that much I can guarantee, it was a HD part, bought at the HD dealer and installed correctly, in fact after 2011, all tourpacks came with this as stock.

I am not happy, we will see what MOCO does for me

wow, good luck.  hope that gets taken care of.

after you get your new tourpack, i recommend the ultra brace eglidegoodies.com (http://www.eglidegoodies.com/id40.html).  a little pricey at $80, but a whole lot cheaper than a new tourpack.

Not saying this is your situation... but for those (including myself) that have TP's with luggage racks and add bags to them be very carefull when you open your TP if you have any weight on the top of it. The tether is not designed to support the extra weight and the TP itself is very thin and flexible at the hinges. I try to make it a habit to support the TP when I open it until the tether is supporting it and never let the tether totally support it when there is weight/something on the luggage rack.

Is there someway to mount an additional support or maybe something that would catch only if the tether breaks? It is ribbon thin.

I concur on the Ultra Brace. I still don't toss the lid around.....but, I know it won't just let go like the HD shyte.

You could install the old cable that came standard before Harley came out with this Mickey Mouse retracting string.  The retracting string they use isn't any heavier than some of the similar products I've used over the years for things like keys and identity badges at work.  Another option is to install the Ultra Brace others have already mentioned.  If you're not familiar with it, follow this link:

In order for the warranty claim to be approved the shop will need to provide supporting evidence that the lid was defective.

As d00d pointed out, any weight on the luggage rack (I think in excess of 10ilbs) is considered out of spec and may cause damage. I have had this sort of happen to me twice. Once, the technician did a crap install on a chrome hinge, it cracked on the test drive. They replaced the whole pack. My second time was just from use (abuse?) and I just finished having it repair by my paint and body man. Did I tell you I have a really good paint and body man?

Anyway, best of luck.

The "old" cable always worked fine for me.

I have this and it works great, especially with a bag on top of the torupack, just be sure to remind the wife about it. Mine bent mine three times. She's a slow learner I guess. After the third time, I had to buy a new one. Wife no longer closes the tourpack.  :2vrolijk_21:

I’m using the Ultra Brace as well and find it superior to the stock cable. However, care needs to be taken when closing the lid; you can bend the arm as GC-Super pointed out when the brace stays in the locked position. You wouldn’t realize this is happening until the lid drops and you see it’s out of alignment to latch. I’d also suggest using blue loctite on the fasteners as they can vibrate loose.
