Not a chance sir, not a chance.  Just yesterday spent the holiday evening with dad's eldest and only living sibling.  My 92 year old aunt and her two kids and all their kids and one more generation that's dropped.  So the one aunt or uncle I've got left and the one group of cousins I know and like.  As would be expected all the family stories started flowing and several of them were of my dad.  Nice to be reminded even a a dozen years later how much fun he was and how close we were.  Still miss him.  It was a good evening yesterday :2vrolijk_21: .

Ignition coil (preventive replacement)?
« Reply #17 on: December 07, 2014, 10:09:20 AM »

I had a 2010 Street Glide meticulously maintained coil went out right under 40,000 miles.  I got the diagnosis thru the speedo diagnostic code feature.  This is a cheap part that i would certainly carry in the bag if i am out of town (out of range of harley dealerships) say night riding in the country as you go across the state.  Its very obvious when the coil takes a chit....you will notice the engine will fire on one cylinder and then it will just die.  The good thing it is very easy to replace and diagnose.  maybe a 50 or 60 dollar part.  As far as carry possible replacements.  I would do it by mileage needs, but only on things that can be easily removed and repaced on the side of the road.....always carry a set of spare plugs.  it is almost the simple stuff that fails.....I would not carry a spare starter because your bike has 199,000 miles.  Likewise a compensator nut is a MUST replacement item that will take a chit on you when you least expect it....I have had 2 touring bikes and both needed upgraded S.E comp nut.  The last one on my CVO died when on a trip to the west coast.  The mom and pop harley dealer did not have a spare and all they could do is tighten me up until i made it to L.A. (Simi Valley Harley) where the replacement was kept in stock and installed.  I should say the bike only had 7,000 miles when the stock S.E. comp nut died.  I think the best way is to replace things as you happen to be making routine repairs and inspections.  If you are in the primary drive making a repair...this is the time to beef up the comp nut and other easy to access parts in that area now that everything is apart.   But i probably would just invest in ESP and not worry about what is going to break down...just ride the bike.  The odds are still with you that your ride will get you there and back with no problems.  If you are riding an evo don't worry about the internals....they will NOT break down...the EVO motor is the only one i have taken on long road trips and never had to stop in at a harley shop to have it repaired.....it is indestructible.
