That is actually happening in parts of California. The drought is making people pull out their lawns and replacing them with AstroTurf, outdoor carpeting, rocks and pebbles, or just slab.

When I decided it was time to get a bike again after not riding for 8 or 9 years, I sold my lawn mower the week before I bought a bike.  The only time I had to cut grass and to ride was the weekends...pretty much a no brainer.  I've had a lawn guy ever since.
