Dtc code b1005
« on: December 30, 2014, 04:09:36 AM »

Fuel sending unit high/open instruments.

The low fuel light comes on with more than 1/4 tank. Does this mean the gauge is bad in the dash?
I never considered the gauge accurate, but what else could it be? Are there running issues if I don't address it right away?

2006 CVO Ultra.

Thanks

The code is set when voltage is high on pin 9 of your speedo.  This can be cause by the float being obstructed.  Since you said it doesn't read correctly.  That is wear I would start.  In the tank.

I just went through this a couple of months ago on a bike.  It was causing no other issues and I can't think how it could.

The float inside your tank is likely either stuck or obstructed.  You haven't put anything in your tank, have you?  (like one of the voodoo fuel catalyst's or something - that could be lodged against your float)

No, I have not put anything in the tank. I guess i need to run it low and then remove the canopy and see if it moves freely?

I was under the impression it was the resistance that is too high with that code, not the voltage.  B1005 - Fuel Level Sending Unit High/Open.  If the resistance is too high, or the circuit is open (infinite resistance), a stuck float isn't likely to be the cause.  I'd suspect a bad connection somewhere in the circuit.

Ironhorse, is the fuel gauge actually working?  Does it register full when you fill the tank?  How about when the tank is nearly empty?  If the gauge actually works and is reasonably accurate except for the low fuel level light in the speedo, your problem may just be related to the part of the circuitry that controls that light. :nixweiss:

Thanks for the enlightenment hrdtail78, I guess this one is different than some of the other codes I've dealt with where high meant high resistance and low meant low resistance.  Just shows to go me that assuming things, especially with H-D, isn't wise.

Back to the rest of the issue.  A stuck or sticking float will cause erratic or incorrect readings, but it won't cause the resistance or voltage to exceed the normal range, high or low.  There has to be something other than just a stuck float.  Perhaps the contact of the float arm that rides on the variable resister could be losing contact if the float arm was bent, but there again that would directly affect the actual gauge reading and operation.  Thus my question about actual gauge operation.  If the gauge itself is operating normally (reads full when actually full, and somewhere close to empty when actually near empty), and doesn't have obvious fluctuations while riding due to losing continuity, I still think there has to be more involved than just a stuck float.

wiring harness under the tank is a known issue on these years.  stretched and or broken wires.  specifically yellow/white wire going from fuel gauge to speedo (pin 9) and light green/white wire (pin3) going from speedo to connecter 156A/156B on main harness
