Spun aluminum SERK wheels: best dressing?
« on: December 28, 2006, 12:46:57 PM »

Bought some HD Detonator wheels for my '02 SERK.  Want to buff up and seal (if possible) the spun aluminum mirror-like wheels that came from the factory.   I'm told heat will shine 'em up (i.e. a good polishing wheel).

I'll either keep 'em, or sell them on eBay after i bring back their luster.   They've not been EZ to keep clean.

----end of whine-----

Q. any general tips on sealing the aluminum?   Even doable?

After having some custom engraving done on my SERK wheels, I tried to have them chromed, but it would not work.  Two different chromers said that they couldn't do it because it is a two-piece wheel with a layer of silicone in between, and they will not take the chrome process...I learned that those rivets you see on the wheel are not just for show...they are holding the two pieces together!  On to Plan B...the folks who did the engraving sent them off, had them repolished, and then powdercoated with a clearcoat.  Worked great...looks like chrome, and REAL easy to keep clean...probem solved.

SCRM-R,
You done me right on the air cleaner dude, so I'm gonna trust you on this one too. Where do I send my 03 SERK wheels to have them engraved and then clear powder-coated ?  Me and Beags were talkin about this very thing a few days ago and you are so right on the two piece deal. Also, the rims are steel, the hub and sides aluminum and those rivets you mentioned are stainless. S'anyway, as I said me and Beags were discussin this and we came to the engraving idea as the solution for doing something a bit different. So throw me a bone and tell me where

also and you had to know this was coming

Spiderman,  here is a photo that shows the wheel after engraving and powdercoating...I swear you can't tell that it is not chromed..., one of the rotors that has been engraved and chromed, and the lower part of the front fork sliders that were engraved and chromed.  As you can see, all of the engraving has been filled with paint...the reason that I wanted the wheel powdercoated or chromed is because I figured that I would never get the black residue that is a result of polishing aluminum out of the engraving.  I had a number of other pieces done by them, including matching saddlebag latches...photos of them are elsewhere on this site.  Powdercoating the wheel was an afterthought, after they realized that they couldn't chrome it.  Oh, and they say that they can do chrome powdercoating too, but I was a little skeptical of that process.  I have a pretty good history with these folks, they do full custom and AWESOME work...I believe that they can engrave anything that you can think up..., but expect it to take awhile, as they are S-L-O-W.  The phone number is on their website http://www.sanjoyengraving.comTalk to Joyce...tell her that Marvin sent you...I have no interest in these folks other than to attest to the fact that their work is top notch.  Good luck...let me know how it goes.
