58 mm Tb making noise when bike is idling.
« on: February 28, 2015, 08:58:03 PM »

Hey all, so finally got my SE 58 mm TB on today and started the beast up. Runs nice on the hoist but when the bike is idling the TB makes a rattling.  The stock TB never did that. I was wondering what that is all about and if there is a fix for that. Will the dyno tuning change anything? Thanx .

By any chance, are you using a "heavy breather" air cleaner? The filter will sometimes rattle against the plenum if not set correctly.

What air cleaner are you running.  My 58 mm intake also I noisier than the stock one. Might have something to do with the cams.   I think it's common.  John Sachs told me it was nothing to worry about. Once you get moving you shouldn't notice it.   Stuart.

I have a RSD designs air cleaner.  Nice solid intake.

Are you sure you are supposed to re-use the stock TB support bracket?

Good eye. This is a pick with the stock TB. I posted it to show what I am running for the intake.   There are no threaded holes for the support bracket on the 58.  So no bracket is used. We had to machine the intake diameter opening so it will match the larger TB.   The silver area is the machining area.

I just wish there was a way to make it a bit less noisy when idling. There has to be a adjustment in there some where. ??

This noise is normal for FBW throttle bodies on idle since they don't have an IAC like cable units.  I've got it with my stock unit and the amount of noise can vary which I assume depends on size and cams used.

I experienced a similar noise after changing cams. The tech that did my dyno afterwards said it is due to the change in the overlap of the cam profile. While it was running on the dyno he showed me by just resting a pencil eraser against the butterfly the sound went away. That was 20,000 miles ago. The noise never gets any worse or any quieter. I just have the stock TB.

Yep, anyone can do the test by removing the a/f and taking their finger and put it against the "flopping" throttle blade.
A bit of play in the gears that control the blade along with the blade set screw and pulsing inside the intake when using performance cams with overlap and...bingo...clock,clock,clock sound at idle.
Some a/c designs add to the noise volume...ie: Heavy Breathers

i wondered the same thing on my 58mm.  Took everything apart and nothing loose just how it is.  It is kind of annoying but i just overlook it.  I have the s&s 585 cam also.

I noticed you have a PM air filter, did you take the nut out inside the center of the filter that is NOT needed.

Oh ya, that nut is GONE!!!  I just silicone'd the hole shut. Could not sleep knowing that nut is there and ready to come loose and get eaten up.  In fact, I read a thread on here some years ago of that same scenario happening. The nut came loose and got eaten. Destroyed the mans top end.  Can any one remember that thread?  Dam nut!!   :-X
