See if you think there is enough surface to seal
« on: March 04, 2015, 07:06:49 PM »

Take a look at the attached picture, the "gouge" you see is compliments from Diamond Heads.  This is the top of the head where the chrome rocker box sits, you can see the push-rod holes to the left.  There is a slight bit if surface that isnt damaged.  Diamond Heads wont return my correspondence but at this point I cant say for certain that it's leaking since the bike is several weeks away from complete assembly.  I'd be interested to hear what you have to say.

Can't tell how deep that is but if I had it here I would either surface the top or put a dab of weld there then surface it. Don't use JB weld.

You've not yet assembled.  Fix it while it's still easy to get to.  Little feels worse than having to tear down a fresh assembly.  Even worse when you know it's because you cut a corner.  If not something you're comfortable doing or able yourself take it to a good machine shop that can weld it up then surface it back it down.  Do it now while it's till simple.

And, FWIW, several years ago I had an issue with the same company you're having issues with now.  Long time difference but my reaction from the company was as yours.  They were slow to deliver product.  Only moderately communicative once my parts were in their hands (though very chatty before actually getting the job).  Then when I got parts back with an issue I couldn't get the time of day from them.  Never again.

I love the look.  Hate that the found a way to patent an otherwise simple (if tedious) machining process that many could do were the company not so judicious.  But with my experience, never again.

Pretty much summarizes my exact experience.

We see constant incoming shipping damage here, and it is a genuine time-killing PITFA.
If the carriers can pick it up, they can also throw it.
Just touch that blem with a tig torch and some filler rod, and kiss the rocker box surface with a fly-cutter.
Done.

It's easy to blame the carriers, since we've all seen the video's of the delivery folks throwing packages around and even an occasional clip from inside one of the sorting facilities where stuff isn't exactly handled with kid gloves either, but ultimately much can be laid directly back to the folks packaging the parts for shipment.  Cheap packaging insufficient to protect the contents is something I see all the time.

Btw, if this was shipping damage, I would have expected the container to be obviously damaged, or the parts loose in the box to bang against each other.  No mention was made of damage to another part in the shipment.  To me, this looks much more like damage created in the vendors process, not shipping.  While you could force the issue with them, based on what others have reported in the past when trying to work with this company the advice to have a quick weld and fly cut repair locally will likely get you up and running a heck of a lot sooner, with fewer spikes in blood pressure.

You're correct grc,  nothing else in the box was damaged and neither was the container.  You can also see where the blemish was obvious and "they" took an air polisher of some sort to smooth it out.  I dont think FedEx or UPS would go that far...

As twolanerider said,  Never again!!

We ship out of here 5 days a week, all over the country, and internationally also.
I can count on 1 hand over almost 30 years where we had a damaged parcel, but the incoming damage is constant, and yes, some of that IS due to folks just not packaging things correctly.

When doing the 117 Build, I just got used shipping containers (boxes) for the various components (heads, jugs, exhaust etc...) from my Dealer or Indy. I figured that if it was good enough for the MoCo, it was good enough for me :nixweiss:

I've had issues with parts coming back from the Diamond cutters. On behalf of the freight company, the way Diamond wraps their parts I can't see how damage can be done during shipping. That leaves only 1 place the damage can happen.... in their shop.  :nixweiss:

If you blow the picture up, it sure looks like damage at Diamond, not a ding or mark due to poor shipping.  I have had plenty of parts come in with shipping damage and the box is usually destroyed and the part would not have that little of damage.

I agree with Twolane and everyone fix it know while it is an easy fix.

There is no question where the damage came from and especially since they took a grinding wheel to it after the fact.  These folk have been the epitome of bad customer service from the point at which my stuff was sent.  I thought maybe it was due to now going through a preferred dealer but if that's the case, bad bad bad!

That will leak, from oil running down the inside of the rocker cover. ta be sure as Murphy put his missus in charge.

You gotta get it filled and machined, or, you could get away with an epoxy based cold weld compound and carefully fit and shape by hand.
