LED Driving lights
« on: March 09, 2015, 06:24:58 PM »

Looking for opinions on driving lights ... I have a 2014 CVO Road King, and I want to add caliper mounted driving lights. Has anyone had any experience with either custom dynamics cool magic driving lights, or the motolights with LED? I am looking for more that just a marker light ... something that will fill in some of the gap that the LED headlight leaves due to its flat beam. Thanks.

Check with some of the BMW Forums.  The riders of the GS and Sport Touring models have a lot of experience and suggestions.

I have the caliper mounted Motolights with the brightest LED's they offer schmidtdog. I had them mounted late in the season last fall and didn't ride much at night before storing the bike for winter, but what I recall about them is they do offer some additional light up close. They also serve well to alert oncoming vehicles you are coming. Don't know anything about the CD cool magic lights or cost - the Motolights aren't inexpensive, but they are excellent. If you go the Motolights route call them as they'll provide a CVO forum discount that you can't enter in the web sales form. I'll attach a photograph for review.

I have the cool magic billet bullets from Custom Dynamics. I also have the Daymaker LED headlight. The Cool Magic lights are really bright and the chrome finish has held up well for about 3/4 of a year now. However, with them nounted on the calipers they really don't shine high enough to fill in any gaps from the flat beam of the Daymaker. They do light up and area in front of the bike that allows me to look down and through my LRS dark tinted windshield that was completely black before. I also feel it makes the bike much much more visible to other vehicles, and have had several people mention to me that the bike is really visible without asking them for iany input.

Kiro,
When you get her back out can you get some close up pics?  Looks nice and the placement is good.

Thanks,
Jason

I do a lot of photography Jason so generally create a record of everything as my cameras are always at hand. Find attached a composite of several shots at the time the lights were installed in late September last year. If you need larger/more resolution images I can forward the individual shots. Hope this helps...

I've got the Kuryakyn 3" fender mounted lights on mine. This photo is of the H3 bulbs but they do offer an LED bulb at an additional cost.
BTW the headlight and passing lamps are HD Daymaker LED's, just for comparison of the LED vs Halogen.

Just wondering if any one has any experience with the Clearwater LED's? They seem to have a much higher light output than any one else.

Also, wondering about where to mount them? I have a road glide. Caliper mounted seem to make the most sense as the lights will move with the front wheel. But those do not seem like they are mounted out wide enough. Mounting wider, like on the engine guards, would give more of a triangle safety of light. But would they provide enough light in the turns

I have ones I made from Dyna turn signals and Oznium parts inside of them. Mounted them to my calipers. $150 invested with some beer time. The did fill the gap on the '11 SERGU nicely. Haven't had a chance to ride the '15 SERGU at night yet to see how much they help with these LED reflector headlights. Wasn't too worried about them turning with the forks as the light they put out did a decent job. I'm not looking that close in front of the bike at night.
I had many people that I rode behind tell me they make me very visible.

I added my lights to the bottom of the crash bars go get more road surface, will add pics later when I can take them.

Installed the daymakers on my 2014 CVO Limited. Fills the gap left from the headlamp and aux lights. No night ride yet but in the garage it hits a different level than the other two. Seems all three sets have their own area now.

Thanks for all the responses. I spoke with Tina at Motolights .....she informed me that they have another light that is currently in R+D, and should be available shortly ... think I'll wait to see what that looks like

I'm following this as I'm going to need to address this on my cuse5.
I have the same fender lights from Kury that Phato has. They have been OK, but last fall I swapped the main and passing lamps for the OEM DayMaker setup from a buddy's '14.
Now, of course, the Kury lamps just look sad in comparison and the color is way off.
I'm looking for a good way to step them up to seriously useful LEDs.
Kuryakyn, of course offers an LED conversion but it's only a single LED. This would likely fix the color match but I have doubts that they are really bright.
What I'd prefer would be to find a really bright array that I could install in the Kury housings.
Looking for ideas.
