Veterans Benefits (or, don't assume you don't get any).
« on: March 17, 2015, 10:46:12 PM »

I started a thread about VA Health care and like the way it went. But it was pointed out to me that Health Benefits are only one area the VA provides services to Veterans.

Yes, there is a "means test" or financial disclosure for certain benefits, but there are many more benefits that have no such means test.

The point of my post is this : Don't let anyone, even me, tell you what benefits you are (or are not) entitled to.  Let the VA tell you that.

The VA has a booklet with all that information.  For example, there is not means test for a headstone, or burial in a National Cemetery.  There may be Job Training assistance.

Please don't listen to anyone when making this decision, go to the source and find out the facts.

And, thank you for your service!

I agree, incredible confusion and mis-information in this area.

I guess "Medical Benefits" is open to interpretation as well. I have excellent medical insurance but have chosen to get my medical care through the VA. In some people's minds, VA = Indigent Care.

I have options, I choose to get the best healthcare possible. In my case, that has worked out to be the VA. If I were not eligible for care at no cost, I would still get my care through the VA facilities I have experienced. (I suspect I might not be satisfied with some VA facilities). I have no issue with my private insurance being billed too, that leaves funds and resources available to take care of other veterans without the same resources.

I recently received a copy of the VA Health Benefits book, and was surprised that it actually addressed my personal case. Everything was spelled out.......so, like r0de_runr said, it's best to get info directly from the source. Some things in there that I was unaware of.
