Crank end play.
« on: May 12, 2015, 09:24:13 PM »

As the builder tore my primary apart to install the Baker Comp I grabbed the end of the crank and started to pull on it. It moved in and out a fair bit. Builder rigged up a micrometer and it measured 0.013' in and out.  The crank is welded and has the Leftie conversion. Is this to much,  or am I with in speck. What is the allowable speck for this type of play.  Will this play make any kind of noise ( knocking or banging while running  )  Thanx for the info.

You should not have that kind of play with a weld crank. Something is definitely wrong. Factory spec is 0.012", which is way too much. Factory spec use to be 0.005" or 0.006" until they started having problems so MOCO doubled the spec.
While I'm not builder, anymore than 0.005" should be addressed.
How much play was in it when you rebuilt the crank?

I think you're confusing radial runout with endplay.  Prior to the '07 crankshaft changes, the maximum wear limit for runout was .003", and that's the one they kept increasing until they reached .012" due to their inability to maintain a decent runout on the new crank using the new production process.

The endplay is controlled by thrust washers.  The actual specification is not that easy to come by for whatever reason, but I seem to remember an old spec of .003" to .010".  I wouldn't hang my hat on that, because my memory isn't what it used to be, and it didn't use to be all that good back then.

That's a lot for a timken conversion.  I like .001-.003.

.003"-.007" of endplay is the old HD spec for a timken bottom end. The Lefty conversion is a straight bearing and does not lock the crankshaft like the Timken conversion.

Is the cam chest apart on the bike?

No the camchest is not apart. Just the primary side. The movement is in and out. My crank is almost perfect at 0.001'  it's just this play in and out. I was reading one different forum that the upper limit for this play is like 0.050'.  And most bike have around 0.015'.  But I was wondering about the 110.

You need to read the endplay with the compensator installed and torqued to spec.

I dug out my old manual and sure enough the endplay spec for 2005 was .003" - .010".  Still haven't seen a spec for the '07 and later bikes, but it really shouldn't have changed.

Jerry, I remember my 07 manual says .003 max pinion runout. But shortly after they bumped it up to .012. I still haven't found a motor builder that would let his hard work hit the street with more than .002 from the ones I asked anyway.

Rooster, I'm not sure if you're just stating the "run out" and what builders like to keep below, or are you confused with the OP with "end play"?

Jerry was quoting end play, not run out.  The OP states that is run out is .001" or less and that's not his question.

My gut tells me that if my crank can move in/out it also has to move the rod crank ends side to side relative to the wrist pin end and that's not good.

I also have some issues getting my mind around a Timken bearing, set of tapered inward facing bearings that have to be pre-loaded, how can it have end play?

Before I put the S&S 124 in .. I had a standard 96b motor in my 07 Deluxe. 2 years ago I sourced a BDL 3'' belt drive.
Fitted it and had to take it off without even riding it because the runout on the crank was so much that it was making the belt
flap about like you wouldnt believe. When makin enquiries I found out it can be a real issue! and its the luck of the draw as to how bad it is.
Now that the 124 is in, maybe next year i'll get another one.  8)

We'd bend the trans mainshaft on our AHDRA racer on occasion, and the 3" belt did not care for that either. :D
