What Cam for a Stage 3 Twin Cooled 110?
« on: May 15, 2015, 09:05:54 PM »

Wrong title, sorry team - after looking at the Fullsac website I should have said "Stage 2".

Have a 2015 CVO RGU (Blue!) and wondering if anyone has changed cams on their water cooled 110's, and if so, to which set / model and what was the resulting performance? A local performance shop is strongly recommending Knight Prowlers (Woods) TW-7H's which were popular around here on 08' to 12' 96"-110"s. However, given the design changes to the engine for liquid cooling and that it appears HD modified their stock 255 cams, I am wondering if there are also after market purpose engineered higher performance cams for the "shower-heads"? Thanks everyone, CR

What has been done to the bike thus far?

My PO......Fuel Moto head pipe, SE replacement A/C element, and Crusher Mellows.
Tune it with the TTS. Leave the cam alone.

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply -  fullsac dxpipe and 2" cores, se air breather, tts so around 100hp and 113tq, hoping for 110hp and 120+tq. She is a little quiet though so considering the V&H stainless 2:1 pro pipe as well because I've had pro pipes on 2 of my other bikes, also had the d&d 2:1 fat cat and borzilla with "quiet" baffles on 2 other bikes but prefer the pro pipe for 2 up touring.

Leave the 255 in(a great cam when tuned properly) add a SE 58mm TB, swap out the CVO mufflers for a set of 4" Rineharts
Get a great tune,,,  that is key... Anything more will require pulling the heads

Thanks D, do you have a dyno sheet for this combination? Appreciated.

An Andrews 57 or an S&S .570 would work VERY well.

I had the woods 7H cams in my 2009 110. I liked the performance but would not recommend them, they are very noisy, much more so than the 255s.

The 7H needs more compression. While the 255 good down low and works for someone who never goes above 4K RPMs. I would go with Hillsides recommendation of an S&S 570 or maybe 551 (Scott do you like these in stock engines?

I would suggest you find a local shop to help you that tunes in house and can show you what you can look to see for final power.  Go with that selection..

57 just like stock and the 570 falls shorts and is a poor choice as well... A shop that tunes can show you this first hand and over lay these graphs to show you where other bolt in cams will provide more power.

Thanks everyone. LC, that does look like a good choice, viewed a similar dyno on Fullsac's website and intrigued for sure. GMR, that is the plan but unfortunately our local performance tuning shop has never done a liquid cooled bike so I want to attempt avoiding being totally experimental... or mental. The local HD shop's best tech, a good guy with a fair share of experience is in Mr. D's camp and says leave the 255 alone, "the gains you'll get from just a cam change aren't worth it" (after you have already completed a stage 1). They say God's greatest gift to man is the power of choice... I think he's up there having a good laugh at us most of the time! ;)

Thanks GMR and LC110 - reading on the differences between air cooled and twin cooled 110's and there is mention of changes to the cams related to the engine changes on the Rushmore bikes. This is from the article "Six Things You Should Know About Liquid Cooled 2014 Harley-Davidsons" on motorcycle.about.com...

"You may have heard that Harley has boosted engine output between 5 and 7 percent, which might make you think those gains are all due to liquid-cooled heads. But that’s not entirely accurate. The engine improvements which came with Project Rushmore include new cam profiles with higher lift and duration, which aids overall performance. But both the standard and Twin-Cooled engines see the performance gains."

So the questions that are now stuck in my head include but are not limited to :) ... "is this a new 255 cam or did the 255 cam just come out with the 2014 twin cooled bikes? And if the 255 has been around for years and people are comparing cam choices, are those comparisons against the old 255 or the new Rushmore 255 they reference in these technical articles?"
