Lowering front end by sliding tubes up into triple tree
« on: May 17, 2015, 10:18:31 PM »

Has anyone had experience lowering the front end by sliding the fork tubes up the triple trees? Looks like it would lower it the same as installing a lowering kit, the same or little affect on the rake and trail as a lowering kit. The shock legs have 4 inches of travel and theirs 4 1/2 inches of available travel before the lower housing hits the lower triple tree with it set 3/4 of an inch higher in the tress. Have read on other forums that it has been done to dynas, softails and xls.

It would appear that with the changes made in 2014 you could in fact slide the tubes up just like a Dyna, but before doing so I think I'd do some more checking on clearances.  There are more things to look at besides just the fender to lower fork bracket.  Make sure you also have sufficient clearance fore and aft between the rear of the fender and the frame, lowers, etc. at full compression.  Sliding the tubes up also alters the fore and aft location of the tire and fender, as well as trail.  Best to make sure before tearing up some expensive parts.

Ive double checked and rechecked everything. I don't see any clearance problems.

3/4 of any inch is what the lowering kit gives you versus stock.

I have thought about doing this as well. I just got my bike back from doing the premium ride lowering kit and should've told them to do it then. Anyways the bike rides alot better and does not dip anymore.

I had the premium ride lowering kit in for about a month and found it was to stiff for my taste. It didn't nose dive anymore though. So I'm looking at going this route.

I did this on my wife's old sportster. Lowered rear by 2" with progressive suspension and slid the front fork tubes 2" into triple trees.  Bike road great. I eventually installed the 2" lowering kit into the front forks, more for appearance than anything else. Never could get use to the fork tubes sticking out of the triple tree top. Just fussy I guess.

From my knowledge, fork lowering kits do two things. They lower the bike but it has less suspension travel and rides rougher. When you slide the tubes up in the trees, the front end retains stock fork travel. This might cause clearance issue with the front fender if forks bottom out. Your front brake lines will also be too long.
