New Lifters, What Else?
« on: May 18, 2015, 10:22:23 AM »

I have my 09 Fatbob in the shop for tires and at 21K miles I am considering a prophylactic lifter change. I will most likely go with the S&S brand. My bike has the 110 upgrade kit from Harley pistons and 259 cams and a Propipe and I like the way it runs so just want to keep it running well. Oh it does have the top end rattle at around 2700-3000 as has been noted by many and mine has done that for sone time now but without any issues.

What else might I ask the tech to do or look at?

S&S lifters for sure.I'd be tempted to do a proper compression check just to verify engine health.
If the exhaust is coming off, look for wet coking in the ports, a sign of valve seals leaking.
Obviously look at cam lobes for frosting, wear, and check the tensioner shoes likewise.. If everything looks good, button her up with new lifters and ride!!  twinotter

I am not doing the work myself but I want to be clear with the tech that i want all pertinent items checked. I am looking to the experience of the forum to help me be thorough.

Depending on how deep you want to go, the other "weak link" is the inner cam bearings.  See how much more they would charge you to pull the cam plate, inspect the cams and oil pump, and change the inner cam bearings to the full complement parts like the 2013 and later bikes.  It's bound to be a significant increase in labor cost, but I'd at least ask and then decide if I wanted to spend the extra money.  Since you had the upgrade kit installed previously, you might want to check your records and see if the inner cam bearings were already changed during that kit install.  Most Harley shops tend to offer that extra whenever they pull the cams.
