Use that damn dialectric grease (sparingly),  it is NOT something that will allow current to flow.  It's primary purpose was/is to coat sparkplug boots for easy on/easy off................It is NOT a do all/end all for electrical shorting problems at all. :-\

Just enough to keep water out of the connection. I did not goop it in there.

When I said "liberally", I didn't mean use a whole tube, and I meant on the part of the connectors that seal out moisture and dirt. 

Btw, dielectric grease has been used for a very long time on a lot of stuff other than spark plug boots and distributors.  You will find it from the factory on many electrical and electronic connections these days in the automotive world.  Not only does it help keep water out of connectors, but it also helps prevent corrosion and fretting of the actual terminals as well.  If the terminals are the proper fit, they will "wipe" off enough to make a good connection.  You will also find it in a lot of bulb sockets.

I haven't run into any of this yet but it seems like you damn near have to be on top of the bike for them to work. A little longer range would be nice.

Longer range would be nice. I have to be in just the right location for my fob to unlock the bike, right side just in front of the tour pack. Even then and there it usually takes a few extra tries before it unlocks. One time it wouldn't unlock at all and I had the forks locked so I put the key in the ignition and the whole darned ignition switch popped out! Haven't had that happen again but I am leery of locking the forks now.

Have had the same issues with my 2013 CVO ultra.  I have found that using the fob just to the forward area of the tour pack (where the receiver is located under the seat) works best.  The range is about 10 - 15 feet at best.  Also found that I was carrying the fob in my pocket and believe inadvertently depressing the buttons and killing the battery.  (just my opinion)  The buttons on my fob are very sensitive.  Now I hang the fob from my belt loop and the battery seems to last longer.
