Cooler oil for 2015 wet head 110 motor
« on: May 25, 2015, 09:04:59 PM »

Looking for some advice:
Motor: 2015 CVORG 110 with Full sac DX 2.o cores and GMR cam. Bike runs great and cooler than stock. Would like to add some oil cooling but the only choices I know of are:
Oil Bud
Harley +1.5 oil pan

I am leaning towards the HD oil pan, the oil bud location scares me and the extra 1.5 quarts of oil should really help Temp.

Opinions?
Other options?
reviews?

Save your money and don't do the pan
Get an UltraCool that's it, done.

The oil pan isn't going to lower oil temps all that much, and definitely not enough to justify the price.  Why are you so worried about oil temperature?  Don't let the paranoia of other folks cause you to obsess over a non-issue.

Do you have a link for an UltraCool that fits a wet head?  I don't see one listed on their website, and I don't see how they could mount the one they offer in that location with the water pump in the way.

. I have an ultra cool but I do not think you can put them on a "wet head or shower head motor.   Do the twin cooled engines have a regular oil cooler on them?

I think the only two options are oil bub or the larger oil pan.  Doesn't Baker make a larger pan also?

Baker and Harley both offer a larger oil pan.  IMHO a waste of money if all you're looking to do is slightly lower oil temperatures (and also make getting the oil up to temperature take a lot longer in cool weather).  As for separate oil coolers, I haven't seen anything for a wet head.

I'll go back to asking, exactly why do wet head riders think they need an oil cooler?  If your water cooled heads are working correctly, the oil temperatures shouldn't be high enough to worry about needing an oil cooler.

Jerry,

I should have put a third option I guess:
Do nothing.

I live at sea level in central Calif. A lot of my rides leave here in 100+ temps and within 120 miles we have climbed to over 10,000 feet. Hot days, long uphill pulls = hot oil. I got the bike in November but on a few days of 80+ temps I have seen 260-265.

You are correct, I will do nothing and monitor when the hot days arrive. At what temp do you start worrying? I am using Mobil 1 in engine. I only have the POS HD dipstick temp gauge, but I "boiled it" here at 14 foot elevation and it read 214.....

You didn't say what tuner you're using and if it's a canned map or it was dyno tuned. Considering your elevation changes you may also want an autotune

260-265 on hot days I would not worry to much.  285+ you are now getting into the danger zone.

My Twin Cooled 2015 doesn't have an oil cooler, coolant circulation pump mounted where the oil cooler was mounted before, under the voltage regulator down low.
The HD oil pan just adds another quart to get to the same temp as the four quarts that you usually have with the stock pan. With nothing cooling the oil it will just take a few minutes more to get warm, once warm its going to be the same temp.
Oil Bud looks promising, but I wonder about it. Mounted between the frame rails and up next to the motor and transmission wouldn't it absorb heat from them? Being that the oil cooler isn't really in the air flow because it is mounted up under the motor and transmission how well does it work? Yep saw the video's of him beating it with a hammer and shooting it with a shot gun. Did see the video of them measuring the oil temp with and with out the cooler, just a skeptic I guess.

These are not that high. Understand you need over 212 temps to remove moisture from the oil. So the avg temps in cars today run 220-240 .

Std oil is good to 275  syn ( i do not care what brand) is 300 using avg numbers here.  So run syn and do not worry about it. Air cooled engine and you temps are what they are.

HD oil pan a total PAI to install , and you have to mod the pan with a hole for temp sender.  Baker easier install but in the end the temp will only take longer to rise.

Oil bud pans really do work , AZ and TX heat have tested them time after time. I agree the hammer and shot gun thing are odd but hell I have seen stock coolers get a rock ding and leak. So he tested it great.

Timing will play a huge role in this set up

Timing vs 10,000 feet.. The bike does not adjust for that so.  You bike at that EL would be lucky to hit 80-85 KPA max so that timing curve is very aggressive( MAP based table)  and with the EL you also run hotter due to lack of humidity. Now the air is thinner you loose pressure it is working hard , timing curve is aggressive and no moisture is the air so the cooler factor is reduced. All things to think about

Oil bud is great. 1 1/2 years on a 124 procharger and no issues. It really does cool the engine down.
