hard ride on CVO
« on: May 31, 2015, 09:54:22 PM »

Test rode a 2014 CVO road king today and found the ride somewhat stiff.  Felt all bumps - much more so than my 06 CVO ultra.  The ride on my ultra seems much smoother.  I did change the front tubes on the ultra to progressive monotubes a few yesrs ago.  Is the ride on the 14 SERK supposed to be stiffer- ?tighter suspension, etc??
Thanks.

Maybe the bike did not have air in the shocks. I usually put about 50 on the pump for the wife and I. When  I rode my bike the first time it did not have air in shocks and it was as you described.  :nixweiss:

the 2014 rk cvo doesn't have air shocks, you need to turn knob on rear shock to adjust to your preference.

One of the changes for the 2014 model year was to the front forks to firm up the ride and handling.  That along with the firmer shocks may be what you're noticing.  The comments on those rear shocks since they first started using them on the SESG have tended to indicate a firmer and more controlled ride.  Just like with the air shocks, getting the preload set correctly is important.

It seems the preload is touchy, I always have to turn the knob down after a passenger rides, then I always have to adjust one way or the other to get it smoother

This is interesting...I just bought my 2014 RG...and have less than 300 miles on it.  I realized yesterday, that I feel "clanking" on the right side floor board.  The feeling is like the frame has no shocks.  Not sure if that makes any sense? I 'am worried that this will be the sound feel for the next couple of years of riding.
The left side is smooth.

Not exactly sure what you're describing, but if the right floorboard has a noise like a "clank" then I'd suggest you look for a loose or misaligned part.  Better yet, with less than 300 miles on it take it back to the dealer.

The CVO Ultra has 13 inch air shocks.  The CVO king has 12 inch hand adjustable gas charged shocks.  The kings shocks are a bit firmer, and have less travel.  The front on the 14 and newer is also firmer.  Between the two it should provide better handling, but a little firmer ride.

I have had a few bikes with the 12" premium hand adjustable gas shocks, and like them.  My 13 King has them.

When I got my 15 CVO Road Glide Ultra, I hated the handling.  No mater how I adjusted the 13 inch air shocks, it felt like the back end was loose and would wash out in a hard curve.  I just never felt comfortable pushing the corners like I could on my CVO King, or the 12 CVO RG I traded for the 15.

Put 13 inch Ohlins nitrogen gas charged on the 15, now it is firmer but it sure handles much better, and can run the corners hard.

So what I am saying is some really like the smoother ride.  Others like me prefer the firmer ride for improved handling and performance in the curves.

Did you put an aftermarket exhaust / headers by any chance?  If you did my guess is that the heat shield hits the floorboard.

It takes a few adjustments with the shock knob to get her nice and smooth, different but when you get the adjustment down its good to go.

I put Progressive shocks on the back and heavier fork oil as there is no Progressive monotube kit available for the 2014 CVO RK. I like a 'tight' ride and this setup provides just that, never grounded, even when riding 'con gusto' on new laid tarmac I know well. Lots of opinions on suspension on the forum and frankly, none of them are wrong. Just need to know what you want and how much you want to send. The above set up for me is an acceptable price point for the manifest improvement seen.

Actually, I bought the with only 119 miles on it...the previous owner installed Black True Dual V&H Headers with Black OPS V&H Mufflers with a Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner.
I noticed that my local dealership has a the exact same bike as mine...I'm going to test drive it and see if I feel the same clanking on the floor boards.

Since it was pre owned and had a different exhaust installed someone had to remove the RH floorboard.  Check the bolts and tighten appropriately.
