The next day I headed back to where it all begun.  Our little ole hotel in Ouray!  We took in Telluride and Silverton which is always a pleasure.

Mesa Verde’s best-preserved and third largest cliff dwelling was constructed between AD 1211 and AD 1278.

This prehistoric village, built into a natural alcove, may have housed 60 to 80 people in about 130 rooms and eight kivas.

There’s a hole in the floor!  Wonder where it goes?

The cliff dwelling was first discovered in 1888, when two local ranchers chanced upon it while searching for stray cattle.

It is said that the men first entered the dwelling by climbing down this tree, which was later cut down by another early explorer.

Balcony House, with its well-preserved rooms, kivas, and plazas, stands as a tribute to those who built and occupied the site in the thirteenth century, the ancestors of the Pueblo Indians of Arizona and New Mexico.  However to get there you must climb this…a 32ft entrance ladder!

With 40 rooms, Balcony House is considered a medium size cliff dwelling. Only 10 sites in the park have more.
