The US Army managed the park from 1886 through 1918.

Railroad arrived in 1883, allowing easier visitor access.  Automobiles allowed into the park in 1915, making visits easier and more economical.

But it’s best to be viewed by motorcycle!

But first a stop at Buffalo Bill’s hotel now owned by some Russian speaking clan.

It would be here that I would meet one of the most interesting folk of the trip.  A retired Navy man that hit a moose at 55mph, got thrown from the bike and was still goin’ to Sturgis.  Even with all of his wounds which there were a few!

The Moose Slayer!

The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, Wyoming 296, links the town of Cody with the Beartooth Highway and the Northeast Gate of Yellowstone National Park. The route crosses the Shoshone National Forest through the Absaroka Mountains to the Clarks Fork Valley.

The 47 paved miles of the Scenic Byway run from the junction with U.S. 120, 17 miles north of Cody, northwest to their connection with U.S. 212, the Beartooth Highway. The Beartooth Mountains and the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River lie to the north of the road, and the Absaroka Mountains and North Absaroka Wilderness are to the south.

Which leads us to Beartooth Highway – a National Scenic Byways All-American Road.  This 68 mile byway winds its way through southwest Montana and northwest Wyoming and leads into Yellowstone National Park at its Northeast Entrance.

The Beartooth Highway is the section of U.S. Route 212 between Red Lodge, Montana and Cooke City, Montana. It traces a series of steep zigzags and switchbacks, along the Montana-Wyoming border to the 10,947 ft high Beartooth Pass. The approximate elevation rise is from 5,200 ft to 8,000 ft in 12 mi in the most daring landscapes.   :huepfenjump3:
