What is this '3 legged' filter wrench you speak of?

I found a pic

I don't anticipate any more issues though, as my local dealer wont get the opportunity to do that again. I'm not sure what the future at the dealer holds though...just changed hands a couple months ago.

Yeah, that's it......except the little plastic ends went away long ago!

the 3 legged wrench didn't work for me.  i did the same thing as the op, except i ran my screw in from the bottom of the filter instead of the side.  to alleviate any and all future problems, i use the rivco wrench.  never have had an issue with this one.

Did the first oil change at 600 miles with the HD oil filter socket, came right off, it was barley snug.

That's a nice tool for sure, but won't fit the wetheads or S&S filters (smaller diameter)
I keep my 3 legged one in my trailer in case I have a oil change on the road, hasn't failed me yet!
I let a dealer do an oil change for me in OR one year.......learned my lesson on THAT! Pretty easy to over-tighten.

Just be sure to use a 17mm 8 point socket. The 16 point sockets seem to do what the filter wrench does on the HD Filters.

ALSO, for those who want to continue to use the Harley filters, (riders choice) Harley made a newer filter wrench with a longer side skirt. I returned a short skirt one and they handed me the newer one a couple of years ago.

The nut is 17 mm 6 point

I stand corrected.  My point is that some multipoint sockets don't fit as tightly on the bolt head and have a tendacy to jump when torques is applied. Then you may end up having to "screw it" too. 😃 😃

Yup, she's torqued on tighter than necessary!  My strap style wrench was worthless, then found this brilliant idea of tapping a screw threw my cap wrench.  My breaker bar stripped the cap wrench, so then I tried a box wrench on the larger hex fitting on the cap wrench.  No joy.  Just started to round the hex sides on the cap wrench.  Looks like I might need to run a long screwdriver through the filter and hope for enough leverage to break the bich loose.  Yikes.

Wow, I always worry that I don't get them tight enough...hand tight that is. glad you got it off. I do all the services myself except the fork oil.

Oil filters can be a pain to get off of any application if there over tightened. Rule of thumb, lube  "o ring" after snugging it up, turn 1/4 turn too tighten. Next removal will be a breeze :orange:

I did get the old one off after several pokes with the screwdriver.  What a mess!  Oh well, it gave me the excuse to spray degreaser on its underside and get it cleaner than before.

It is hard to believe that they used the same chit hole design for so many years.  I had the last year of the EVO engine in 1998 with the same puzzling oil filter setup obstructed by the stator wire, and now my 2011 made marginally worse with the oil cooler lines.  Maybe they improved it in 2014 but from a visual, I doubt it.

I kept getting evidence of oil leakage that I figured was the cooler lines and eventually realized that it was the filter (HD Chrome). So now, though it has never been my past practice, I find that I have to use the cap wrench to tighten the filter well beyond the "plus two thirds of a turn" method to stop this weeping of oil.

You can also just punch a screwdriver through it and then use that as a lever getting the old filter off. No big deal.

That's what I had to do at the 5k change. The 1k change was done before I owned the bike, but I'm sure it was by a dealer.
